I'm so glad you played this song. It's one of their best. I MUST tell you, though, that the group is led by Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson, but it was Woolfson who wrote most of the songs. Parsons wrote the instrumentals and was heavily into the production, and played all the keyboards, but Woolfson was the songwriting genius. He passed away a few years ago, and it would be great if you could acknowledge him because he never received the credit he was due because his name wasn't in the band's name. I actually interviewed Parsons once and talked to him about how the two of them split up, which he attributed to the public thinking Parsons did everything.

We were actually in our early 20s and could sympathize with the sentiments of the song as we knew elderly folks and watched the sunset of their years. Life was just beginning for us and it was hard to imagine being at that stage knowing we would only be 40 when Y2K arrived. That itself seemed like an eternity away. So to be old and wise? Seemingly impossible. Yet here we are today reminiscing and watching a couple of young folks discovering our treasure. Someday we'll be gone and they will be in the place we are now. Realizing how lucky they were to experience the beauty of "Old And Wise" and perhaps witnessing a young person making the special discovery.

I only rarely comment on content I see on KZitem. However, I am compelled in this instance to relate a personal experience closely tied to this song. I was a Junior in High School. The Alan Parsons Project album "Eye in the Sky", on which this song was included, was released in May 1982 - immediately before I was diagosed with Non-Hodgins Diffuse Hystiocytic Lymphoma Stage II in early June. TLDR; this had a significant impact on my world view and instigated a deep and difficult self-assessment of goals and priorities, as well as clarifying the value of true friends and good people. This music, at this time of my life, was profoundly moving. So much so that the following year, as a member of our Class Graduation Committee, I submitted "Old and Wise" as our clas song. I felt that it captured the right balance of joy and melancholy for the celebration of what for most of us would be a parting, forever. Possibly for the best, my nominee was not selected. However here I am, 41 years later, thinking I was right to suggest it. Thank you for indulging my nostalgia.

The lead vocalists, including Eric Wolfson and Colin Blunstone (who was the vocalist on this beautiful ballad), were so very, very good, each knowing exactly HOW to sing whichever song they sang! What I especially love about APP are those little but amazing moments in the songs that, sadly, only someone with an ear for music will hear - listen at the 3:29 mark for a gorgeous French Horn movement that takes "Old And Wise" to a level that really expresses the meaning in the lyrics!

Amber, as you were talking about wishing you listened to your father’s stories when you were young, it brought back a lot of memories. My dad was a good storyteller; even if you heard it before, you still wanted to listen to it again. There’s a relatable song from the Country genre; from Montgomery Gentry called “Something To Be Proud Of” from 2004. They were perennial runners up to Brooks & Dunn in the best Country duo awards, and you’ve yet to discover them! Their sound is a little more raw, outlaw maybe, but definitely worth going down their rabbit hole!👍

Alan Parsons grew up working at Abbey Road studios....and you can tell who his musical influences are. A very underrated band.....they have made some great music over the years.
