These battles over the world bosses didn't just last for hours, they sometimes lasted entire weekends. War over the Emerald dragon in hinterlands lasted all weekend on Scarshield legion EU with hundreds of players in each faction. Also had a full Saturday war over Azuregos in Azshara. Another fun note about tribute runs in Diremaul; you can actually do tributes without the icetrap or ogre suit by simply getting around the icetrap guard by timing his pathing patrol route and the final guard with the suite by having a hunter just kite him away from the group and then feign deathing after the group gets past him but you also gotta make sure the hunter feigns away from you on the same side where you skip past, or have a warlock to summon him to you guys after he FD's. Ah good times. Look forward to doing it more.

I can see how you draw the comparison to LFD / LFR with the meeting stones. It probably was the origination of the concept because it did work in a very similar way. Two major things to note however.... it only grouped you with people on your server, so you were still seeing people you were highly likely to bump into again.... And secondly, the reason no one used them in the original version was because you had to actually travel to the dungeon you wanted to queue up for. It was a lot less hassle to use trade chat and then travel them, as opposed to just hoping someone swings by to use a stone in what are, oft times, out of the way locations.

The dungeons having optional preparation options, turning it into full fledged adventures, was quite amazing. It kept with the tone of wanting a world that is alive and interacts and breathes, instead of just a flashy but ultimately stale rollercoaster or rather... Disney Park ride with the singing animatronics on the side and you just... well... sitting there doing nothing. This whole, classic, design philosophy made for a better game. It made you plan as a group much more, and kept you really engaged as veterans would show you cool stuff you missed before. In a completely different genre, I believe this is why Path of Exile keeps so much retention in a different but similar way: There are so many options, so many mechanics, that even after 500 hours of playtime you barely understand any of it by just playing - and even getting a phd on the wiki is not helping as much as just trying things out for yourself. This is what classic WoW was: exploring, trying things out for yourself. Hence why in PoE the crafting leagues were always quite boring (especially the current one, Necropolis), while adventure leagues are beyond fun and retain perpetual enjoyment, like Heist and especially Delve and the previous Wildwood - which hopefully makes into the game proper in a good way. Why do those work so well? Exploration, planning, unknown adventure and reward. It is the feeling of going into MMORPG-dungeons in almost perpetual fashion. Always pushing forward a little more. The later Disney-like cardboard-cutout rollercoasters (same found in the worst form in Sea of Thieves) give none of that, you want to skip them instead of replay them.

Lower Blackrock never got enough love and appreciation from players, as it is quite dour and oppressive in athmosphere. However, it is so vast and open; one giant dungeon, that you could decide where to go, which paths and bosses to take. You could clear the entire thing if you wanted although it would take ages to do so. With sneaky ways around this or that too. It was like Diremaul, but as if all the wings were connected as one, in an organic fashion. I so wish they would have stuck to that design philosophy. Stratholme was somewhat similar in that it was one big instance with two entrances - you could technically clear the other side of it too. Scholomance was as well a giant dungeon where players would usually only go for specific wings/bosses and not clear the whole thing, all the while it coming across as one fluent place as if from one cast. Maraudon was the same, not that I think of it, where the two entrances would eventually join onto the main track towards the Stone Giants. This was grand design. Sadly Blizzard later decided to stick with the Scarlet Monastery design of just making completely distinct mini-dungeons that were all just long corridors full of mobs, no choices, and often no mobgroup to ignore or sneak by. The worst dungeon design imaginable.

Original WoW at that time played much closer to an RPG. Of course if you only know the modern version of WoW you would feel like playing a game that's missing a lot of things but in my mind it's really that people learned to make do then. Less automation, much more engagement. Doesn't mean that there was no grind, most grind coming from the fact that things had a dastardly low drop rate or gave very low xp. I remember bear-grinding trees in northern Feralas. Arduous and dangerous on a PVP realm but back then it was possible to PVP against +5 lvl players without getting one-shot.

Actually, the problem that killed meeting stones is that it NEVER took tanks or healers into consideration. So it could very well dump a mage, hunter, rogue, warlock, and a ret paladin into the group. Good luck getting that group off the ground. So instead people used general chat so they can ensure a healer and tank get into the group without having to just kick people. I believe Premade Groups would be a very useful solution to the group finder dilemna, as it just streamlines the annoying "LFG spam" process significantly, but not in the horrific way Wrath's LFG went around doing it.
