After years of planning, Village Tech Schools’ first permanent home is one step closer to reality. In 2013, Village Tech opened to its first 640 students in grades Pre-K through 8, on an engaging campus of portable classrooms on East Parkerville Road in Cedar Hill. In 2015, a new campus for early childhood education opened nearby, again using portable classroom buildings. These campuses have been extraordinarily successful in building Community, one of the three Cs at the heart of Village Tech’s mission. But since the school’s beginning, Village Tech’s leadership has been planning a new, long term home for the school that brings all the things they love about their campus in Cedar Hill, with the added benefits of permanence, and spaces designed specifically for the way students at Village Tech learn. Phase one of that permanent home repurposes an existing 47,000 square foot structure at the corner of Danieldale and Cedar Hill Roads in Duncanville and is designed to advance the mission of Village Tech by supporting the three Cs of Character, Challenge, and Community. The exterior courtyards that are central to the Cedar Hill campus have been translated into interior collaboration spaces filled with soft seating and access to technology. Walls of glass separate classrooms, conference spaces, and offices from these collaboration spaces, creating a sense of community.A neutral interior palette focuses attention on student work. This, along with a variety of space that supports student presentation, fosters Challenge. And simply having an environment that students can call their own, care for, and be proud of, reinforces Character. The heart of the new school is an expansive two-story space that will serve as dining room, commons, and all-purpose space for many school events and activities. This is truly a community room where students of all ages can come together. A learning stair connects the first and second floor and will be the home of a wide range of activities, from just hanging out, to hosting presentations and programs. A balcony corridor rings much of this space, and the pathways flowing into the commons themselves provide spaces for student interaction and individual study. Flexibility and multipurpose use are hallmarks of virtually every corner of the new school, with folding panel walls of markerboards separating classrooms and furniture that is easily customized to the activity of the moment. As the transformation of the existing building begins, planning for the next phase will continue. New construction will more than double the area provided by the existing phase 1 structure, and will create permanent space designed specifically for Village Tech, for every student in every grade to learn and grow
