Straight lines are incredibly useful for approximating continuous smooth curves. If you zoom into a circle, for example, or even a sine wave, what you get is a localized segment which is virtually identical to a straight line. One counter-example is something called a "Fractal", the most famous of which is known as the "Mandelbrot Set". along the "edge" of a fractal, no matter how much you zoom-in, you will always get an infinitely-complex jagged shape. Lines are the best, because linear equations can be evaluated by simple multiplication and addition.

Lines are the best!!! It’s unfortunate that Harry Potter can’t draw vertical lines. He can only draw Diagon Alley.
