Hallo Greg! Fantastic summary on how to get around writing a concept note fully appreciated. However, i have and issue with the activity and budget parts. What is the acceptable level of Excel skills you need and where can you get a crash course on some of these necessary budget analysis (Excel) skills?

Ernest Karuranga thanks for the question. Excel is a very useful tool if you're working in public health. There are one or two very useful KZitem channels that I used when I get stuck - try ExcelIsFun or *****

Thank you very much for sharing Greg, this is really helpful, Just one small question for you most donors would like to see just a one page concept not , would you share with me your experience , Best, Solomie
@gregmartin

Hi Sd Sj - thanks for the question. Actually it does vary from donor to donor. In the example I posted, the donor specifically asked for a short 1-2 page concept note. Other donors, like UNITAID, ask for something significantly more substantial (but they will usually make it clear what it is that they are looking for). The trick is to make sure that your document is easy to understand. I hope that helps. Greg

I am planning on studying the MSc in Global Health in the UK starting this Autumn (Sept. 2015) and I was wondering what scholarships are available out there to fund my studies? I am a dual citizen of both Egypt and Canada.

Sherif Darrag - I seem to remember that LSHTM have list of organisations that provide scholarships and funding support on their webpage somewhere. If you don't have any luck on their webpage then contact the school directly and ask them (or any other school) and they will be able to help you. Good luck.

This is a very useful video ! I´ve been struggling with figuring out how to write grant applications for research projects, especially activities and budget. I´ve spoken to one of my supervisors and he told me that funders usually want the applier to be an expert in the field when they are applying for a call. Especially for bigger international projects one needs to apply with partners that have already a lot of experience in doing research in the field. What is your experience in this case? I would definetly love to see more videos on this topic! Thank you, Joceline
@gregmartin

Hi JDKranenburg Yes, it is true that your chances of a successful grant application are increased if you are collaborating with an existing group (especially if they are already know to the funder). If you have a good research idea, it should be easy to find people who will be willing to collaborate (especially if you offer to do the first draft of the funding application). Good luck Joceline! Hi Greg. With reference to the budget table, I was wondering why you had to add up the AMOUNT column to Q1-Q4 to arrive at your total amount for each category of expenditure line.
@gregmartin
10 жыл бұрын
hi ogbole samuel - you make a excellent point. Actually that was an error on my part (I was doing it in too much of a hurry). I only noticed the mistake once the video was uploaded. But you are right, the amount column should not have been included.

I think it would be great to go over the meaning of universal health coverage (considering its renewed importance at the WHO) and the implications that adopting this ideal as a goal (and also the different ways of defining universal health coverage) could have on international and national health policy. Thanks!
@gregmartin

Vania de la Fuente Núñez - I totally agree. Universal Health Coverage can be a tricky issue and is extremely important (especially right now with the WHA coming up). Will start working on something along those lines...
@vaniadelafuentenunez1386

Universal Health Coverage was already the hot topic at the WHA last year and what worried me back then was the lack of a clear definition. I do wonder what progress towards this goal the WHO made since then...I guess we'll see some results in a few weeks after 2014 WHA.
