I loved this, the tips are on point and I remember when I first started being unsure of how I fitted in

Thanks Joey! I was the same way at first. I was afraid other writers would think my ideas were stupid or too weird. I have since learned that with most writers, the weirder the better!

#1 about knowing your audience is my favorite. I wrote my story for myself to help me heal and grow after 26 years in the military, but what I ended up with looks like a middle grade chapter book. I am trying to develop that because as a parent I believe kids could benefit from the stories of finding peace with themselves and the world around them, yet secretly I am hoping some other veterans like myself will also like this book. Do I need to let go of that?

Carolyn, your book can definitely have appeal to multiple audiences! I don't think you need to let go of the hope that other veterans will like your book, but definitely don't make them your #1 priority for something that feels like a MG chapter book. Focus in on those MG readers and really resonate with them. If adult veterans also like the book, bonus!

But I do have depression and anxiety. It's not a stereotype, some of us have it. Now, I don't make it my brand. I talk about it sometimes, yeah, but it isn't my brand. I am equally hard on my writing as well as other books.

A LOT of creatives (writers, musicians, artists, etc) do have some form of mental illness (which is a topic for an entirely different video!). But like you said, there's a difference between having mental illness, and making it your brand. I've seen the sentiment among creative people that they can't get treatment for their mental illness, or else it will "ruin" their creativity. Which breaks my heart!

@@SofiyaPasternack I can't pay for a shrink, that's why I can't get my meds, but oh how I wish I could. I would be a lot more productive if I had my meds. I would have more energy. It breaks my heart to see this glorification of illnesses. Now that basically everything is a brand, people look for those "quirks" to try and stand out. It doesn't work like that.
