yes, that's exactly what I thought. the movies make him look more appealing since we do not have access to his inner thoughts. I for myself do not see him as unredeemable or inherently evil/bad for a good 2/3 of book and movie, more like on the edge of giving in completly to his inner dark desirees, his drilled in faschist-like capitol views and most of all the bad and negative influences he recieves from the outside (Grandmaam, his late father, Dr. Gaul, the capitol as a society/social system). now in a movie with a 3rd person perspective it's hard to illustrate such mental conflicts which is why they chose to make some scenes more dramatic, for example when he punshes Billy Taupe in front of the Covey stage in the movies in the books all lights go out, he get's hit once by a random person and tries to punch back in self defense, that's it.

To your point, deciding to sneak away from his post when he's getting a promotion is the last thing someone who loves power more than people should do, but he does. He generally knows where they're going but has to trust Lucy's information that the specific area is safe. When she lies to his face and runs without him, he sounds more hurt than angry, and only starts being violent when he thinks she tried to kill him first using his own mother's scarf. However, the reason I love this movie is that you can't be sure that's the case. Snow could genuinely care about Lucy, but he would do much the same if he wanted power or control. Lucy could genuinely love Snow, but a person in a depsprate situation would use similar tactics to manipulate someone in power to lift them out of it. And if you come into a relationship with someone predisposed to thinking they're a bad or manipulative person, that's what you'll see in their actions. You know, like how someone in the districts would see a capital resident, or how a capital resident views someone in the districts, or how an audience member would view a future dictator, or how anyone who has been burned by systemic oppression would view any part of the system that enforces it. I choose to think that it's a tragic tale of two genuinely good people who let their prejudices get in the way of a genuine connection and wound each other because of it (I like the idea that most people are genuinely good), but it could be a story about the corruptive power of government or how oppressed people will do anything to survive and very little would change.

It is hinted that because of the dark days, the war, the loss of his father whose teachings were brutal as well as his grandma That Snow's toxic view of the world is born from the hardships he endured as a child, Unlike many of the capital students who were or are rich with families of high importance and wealth He was forced to scavange, he's actually felt real hunger and pain Which is why he can bond somewhat with Lucy Gray But, to him, his life lessons have been you have to fight to survive since 8-10 years old. Still i do think it is a good contrast because Katniss grew up poor, hungry and fatherless too but still kept her humnaity/a good heart Whereas Snow's was posioned long ago and he views the world as kill or be killed, only the winner matters.

It’s a narcissism origin story for the ages & not only does it show it in love, but it shows it in friendships, government & authority. Anyone whose been through this type of abuse will see it. The point of the story is the fall of Snow. At the beginning of the movie, he was a believable, if not somewhat decent person. He worked within the system. Throughout the film, he descended into evil. He killed the one kid in the arena out of necessity (the kid was attacking him, and in the book, even stabbed him and Sejanus). Him and Sejanus were genuinely friends. When Sejanus started telling him about rebellion plans, Snow told him that he didn't want to hear about it, as a way to protect both Sejanus and himself. He wasn't thinking completely clearly when he sent the Jabberjay to the Capitol. After the hanging of Sejanus, he was clearly racked by guilt. Not that I sympathize with him. However, Sejanus was the one person keeping Snow grounded in a moral direction. When Snow lost Sejanus, the last bit of his morality went out the window.

I think Snow and Peeta are foils for each other in a way - at least in Snow’s eyes. Snow thinks Katniss used Peeta as a way to win the games, and her feelings for him were (and are) entirely fabricated. By the end of Snow’s relationship with Lucy Gray, he’s convinced she’s going to betray him. He’s paranoid. Snow sees Lucy Gray in Katniss, and believes Peeta will be betrayed (and used) just like he was. He can’t fathom the fact Katniss might truly care for Peeta as a human being. And I think Snow was so paranoid about Lucy Gray, because he knew he would betray her if push came to shove, and assumed she would think the same way. Snow only really helped Lucy Gray win the games because it was beneficial to him at the time as her mentor. He never would have stuck his leg out otherwise. Snow actually growing to care for Lucy Gray was entirely out of his control, and I believe he hated that fact he actually started to fall for her. It made him vulnerable, and it gave Lucy Gray power over him. And without Snow’s help, Lucy Gray surely would have died in that arena. But this is where Snow and Katniss differ. She didn’t save Peeta with any ulterior motive, not even out of a romantic notion. She just cared for him as she would any other living, breathing person. And she played into the star-crossed lovers narrative to save both her and Peeta’s lives. Not as an angle. Or a manipulation tactic. Snow tried to convince himself deep down Lucy Gray was not District, but instead Capitol in order to rationalise his feelings for her. He pretended to enjoy Lucy Gray’s silly little songs, and hoped one day they could go to the Capitol together. But that was never going to happen. He loved Lucy Gray to the point he could control her, and hated the fact his feelings for her made him susceptible to being manipulated. Was it love? No. And I think Lucy Gray realised that. Snow was dreaming of putting his song bird into a glided cage, because that’s the only way he can love anything. And if he couldn’t control her, she was a loose end he needed to tie up.

They confuse the good looks of the actor with the ugly persona of the character he is playing. It was also a idea to make this book into only one film. It goes too fast and does not develop the character properly. Anyone that has read the book knows that through Snow’s internal monologue, that he never loves Lucy Gray, and in fact, considers her the very first peace in his lifelong games.

This movie has been on my mind since I saw it about week ago, and this breakdown was very interesting to me. The comments have been interesting thought too. The only thing I would add to the comments is that it was hard to detect Snow being completely evil as an audience member when we have been liking his character in the movie and rooting for his motivations. The movie left me torn and confused but the best explanation I can come up with for still feeling bad for Snow, though he obviously is a bad apple, is that his selfish actions are masked so well as caring about others. I wanted him and Lucy Gray to run away into the forest never to be found again. However, in hindsight, all of Snow’s “care” for others were his ideation of his “possessions”. Initially, the audience believes Snow really doesn’t want Lucy Gray to die at the end of the games when it’s just her and snakes. But really, he’s scared and offended that someone would dare take something/someone that is “his”. It doesn’t mean he cares about them as a person, he cares that it’s almost part of his collection, his repertoire, his gallery of things he has controlled. It’s why it’s so easy for him to choose himself when the conflict becomes Snow vs His Collection rather than Snow and his collection vs someone trying to take away or harm something in his collection. Some”thing” because he doesn’t view those in his collection as some”one”. We see this when Lucy Gray realizes she will never be a real priority though he tries to convince her that she is. Snow shows how crazy he is. The snake in the forest was likely to get a reaction. She got what she was looking for. Snow was baffled that one of his “treasures” could also be not just expendable, but harmful to him. This cements his thoughts that he can never let his collection be something he lets get that close in seeing what he has done and who he is. This is why Tigris becomes distanced from him. He thinks now, he can’t let anyone think they are close enough to manipulate him. He’s still proud of his collection but it also means nothing to him if it will harm the rest of the collection or him in any way. I believe that is why so many of the changes to the hunger games came out the way they did. The victors village- an attempt to get his collection to fight each other instead of him for their own little glory. He pampers those around him or makes them feel like they are, to keep them below. Call me crazy but it reminds me of Anakin and Padme from Revenge of the Sith. Anakin is so quick to harm someone he “loves” when it undermines his power or morality. He may have had a tragic backstory, but he will justify anything for “love”, twist any story of what’s right and wrong just because it helps him play victim, even when to an audience, it doesn’t make sense and seems sudden. That’s what I thought of when snow reacted to Lucy running away. Anyway, super long comment but the thoughts have been churning for a week, had to get them out. Great video!

He tries to get the best for himself out of every situation, like playing Sejanus‘ friend so he can profit from his familys wealth. In the movie it seems as if he truely loves Lucie Gray, In the book you see that he sees her as his property from the beginning and is extremely manipulative and jealous, He admits that he just wants Lucie to win the games so he can profit from her victory. Everything he strives for is power and recognition and that determines his entire actions. In the end, he did care about Lucy Gray, but he decided against her without hesitation

The irony is that Casca Highbottom hated Snow because he remjnded him of his father And all of his vitriol was because he thought Snow would become like his father But Imagine if HighBottom hadn't hounded snow, hadn't tried ri cheat him from the money he wanted for his family Imagine if Highbottom had been a better mentor and teacher to Snow Would Snow have fallen under Gaull's mentorship? Would he have been so desperate to imroove the games to make his living and social situation better? If Highbottom had been kinder or more helpfil he could have steered Snow away to his side of thinking Instead every obstacle he put forward for s ow only hekped push and direct snow to the path of evil, And the question was, if life wasn't such an arena would Sbow have felt he needed to cross the line to survive?

The writer and everyone involved in making this movie really did their homework. Villains, in reality, really do stuff like that. Crime, whether filmed or written? Whether reality or fiction? They made hints in the beginning for your notice. To notice a villain is to notice their actions. Was it selfless? Or selfish?

Finely we villain as a main character. I hate goody two shoe main characters who think they should always put people first. It’s a bad thing to put yourself first. People should know this.

And in the same vein, yes at first it was for the greater good, but same thing happened to Walter White. He only needed a certain amount of money, and he even had it down to an exact dollar of how much he needed for his treatment and to help his family. But as we see, he became power hungry. Jesse even told him at one point that he was quitting and reminded Walter that he needed only so much amount of money and that he exceeded his goal and got so much money that he would never be able to use it for many lifetimes but Walter admitted he was doing this for the power.

😅I was actually rooting for Snow. Are we really expecting for him to give up his only living relatives , dreams and family for a girl she juat met? Also, Sejanus was not without fault. That man can't get his shit together and Snow gets in trouble for it. He was right. Sejanus would have gotten a slap in the wrist for being part of a coup while he would be hang for just being his friend.

Snow didn't care about family. Tigris sold herself to financially support her family. And when Snow learned about it he only felt disgust at her.
@Yibambe.

Read the book and you will see that Snow could’ve cared less about his family. I do think Sejanus would’ve figured out a way to get hung no matter what. He had a death wish. But if you were rooting for Snow, at any point in the film, it’s because the film was a poor reflection of the book. Or you care about an actor’s good looks more than actual morals.

Yeah I did not get this vibe at all from the movie. Corny or whatever his name is WAS a good person and did have good intentions. The cruelty of the world he was in and the "betrayal" he felt from Lucy made him a bitter, vengeful man for the rest of his life.

@@isbo88There’s a theory that Maude Ivory is Katniss’s grandmother. Maude Ivory is the cousin to Lucy and she along with Snow, are the only two people to hear the Hanging Tree and Maude Ivory was praised for being able to remember any song after hearing it once. Also Katniss’s dad sang all the time in the woods(mentioned somewhere in the books).
