I'm cracking up because a few months ago I had the realization that my adult thriller is actually adult horror thriller 😂So envious of your research trip, that sounds so fun!!

Looool that’s so funny! We swapped with each other. And I’m very glad to be going on the trip! It was so fun to do my first research trip last year and now I’m kind of addicted. It really just helps so much with the setting

You not writing spicy scenes in your first draft is so funny. I find myself super self-conscious just thinking about it. I have to tell myself that readers would only be aware if it was written extremely bad or well. I just don't know which category I would fall in so I don't even try. Love the new cover of Tender Beasts.

Haha that’s exactly what I think too! They only notice if it’s super good or super bad, so my hope is to just fall in the middle lol. And thank you!!

I also get a lot of second hand embarrassment from anything swoon worthy when I'm reading or writing or watching shows 😂 and I really appreciate hearing authors talk about the drafting process not being their favorite part - when I struggle with it, I feel like I should enjoy it more and hearing that I'm not alone with that is very reassuring! 😊

It’s also been reassuring to me to hear people say they have the same feeling in the comments! At the end of the day it’s all writing throughout the process, so I just remind myself that one part isn’t more like “pure” than the others. And yes haha I also get secondhand embarrassment from consuming media even though I really like swoony and romantic stuff 😅

Yes, planning is very enjoyable. I used to feel the same about drafting as you (ie. not a fan), but then I realized my drafting process was based on what I thought drafting looked like. Once I figured out what my drafting process was, drafting is actually THE most enjoyable part of the process for me. So its basically drafting > planning > revising in terms of enjoyment. But honestly, I love every part almost equally, which is to say, almost TOO MUCH. 😅😁

Haha can you ever love writing too much?? But that’s great that you figured out the best way to draft for you so that you could enjoy it. Because there really is no universal “right” way to write a book but there can be a way that feels right to you

@@LiselleSambury Thank you. IMO, you have the right process when writing is mostly smooth sailing. Anyone can have low moments, creative challenging work will sometimes make you insecure, etc, but overall, the experience should feel positive/productive. I wake up everyday and all I want to do is write. I can write all day and still want to repeat that everyday. I'm not special in anyway. I just finally figured out what works for me and now that the process is stress-free, so all that's left is enjoyment. Anyway, I'm newish to your channel but I enjoy seeing how successful you appear to be. I really want to publish and have similar success. 🙏

Okay, I love your purple hair! 😍 I’m so impressed with all your projects! I love the TENDER BEASTS cover! I saw it on Instagram when you posted it. I feel like it complements DELICIOUS MONSTERS really well! Good luck with drafting your Adult novel! You went on a journey with drafting the many versions and the genre change. The dark academia sounds incredible, too! I’m glad you’re working on it again. I’m working on two Adult novels (one urban fantasy with college age characters sort of like your dark academia and one horror that I’m still conceptualizing). Both adapted from pilots I’ve written. It’s encouraging to watch you because you write in so many different genres! I just love anything speculative! I’m also impressed by how chunky your novels are! Like BLM and DELICIOUS MONSTERS and I’m sure TENDER BEASTS, too! I’m such an underwriter, but I’m trying to bulk up the second draft of my Adult Urban Fantasy (my dissertation novel) and get to 80K. First draft was around 45K.

Thank you!! And yeah, the two ended up being a good complement to each other cover wise even though they’re both standalones. It’s so cool that you have these pilots that you can adapt into other projects! Scriptwriting seems so interesting and really flexible. I know friends who have done that as well. Oh gosh, I wish my books were smaller haha I think it’s better to be an underwriter. But then I guess underwriters think it’s better to overwrite haha we all kind of wish we did the opposite

Hey I don’t know if you will read this, but I wanted to let you know, I absolutely love your books. I was looking for blood like fate everywhere the day it came out, and I read that book so fast. I will drop what I’m reading when your new books come out. The characters are relatable and I spent time reading instead of studying for exams when I am reading your books! Ex. Reading delicious monsters I sat and read your book for 5 hours straight because I just wanted to figure out what happened to Daisy and I still regularly think about your characters. I am so glad you have some new projects coming out soon. They are absolutely amazing and I will read anything you put out. I’m so excited for your upcoming projects!! I hope you come to Calgary some day, it’s on my bucket list to meet you, and I love watching all of your videos, they always cheer me up and are super enjoyable so just overall a big thank you for being who you are.

As a thriller reader myself, when I hear thriller, I default to thinking it's going to be non-speculative, mostly with some kind of criminal element woven into it. While I understand not wanting to call it a science fiction thriller, because that implies so much, speculative thriller seems like the best label to me. In a speculative thriller, the plot is not only driven by suspense and excitement but also involves speculative or fantastical elements that deviate from the real world. There's also less pressure to adhere to any specific tropes or dedicate any kind of intense focus since the term is pretty general/loose. Most importantly, it highlights the fact that it's not going to be a thriller like the most popular kind (ie. crime thriller, psychological thriller, spy/espionage thriller, etc). Just my 2 cents.
@LiselleSambury
Жыл бұрын
I appreciate your two cents! I did think about speculative thriller but I wondered if that was too vague? Especially since the themes and book itself are not at all about the speculative elements since it’s just a vehicle for the domestic issues. But I do plan to have the spec element be very obviously in the synopsis which I hope will help guide readers. Because I know it can be frustrating for thriller readers to be surprised by something speculative that they didn’t expect. But who knows, I may end up calling it a speculative thriller in the end haha
@0Raiin0
Жыл бұрын
@@LiselleSambury Spec thriller is "vague" in a sense, but so is "thriller". Both are vague-ish. However, Spec thriller combines two genres speculative fiction + thriller vs. thriller which only mentions one genre. Therefore, on a technical level, spec thriller is LESS vague than thriller. Marketing wise, hopefully you can get an expert opinion on which would be more profitable / satisfying for readers. For the latter, I can only share that when I heard "thriller" I was like YEAAHHH fist pump (will read that ASAP) because that's MY lifelong favorite genre, but when you added speculative thriller, I was like OHHHHHH (will NOT be reading). And I only share this not to make you feel bad about writing speculative thrillers, but to share an honest potential reaction readers may have if they hold the default assumption that thrillers are non-spec. Anyway, I get what you mean by the spec element is barely going to impact the story, so you might be right in the grand scheme of things. This is your book and your choice and you are incredibly thought/intelligent. I'm just here sharing thoughts. I hope none of this is offensive. I actually have on occasion loved spec and scifi thrillers such as Blake Crouch's Black Matter. There is a huge, huge market for anything thriller based, and I think marketing (and genre selection) are VERY important to find THE best demographic for the book so its cool seeing you be so contemplative about the matter. Good luck!
@LiselleSambury
Жыл бұрын
@@0Raiin0 not offensive at all! I can understand how the spec addition can make a big difference for readers since some people don’t like any speculative elements. Though I guess on the flip side, sometimes you get too specific and lock people out. Like, to me, Dark Matter is like a very hard sci-fi thriller haha. I also think because of looking at comparison titles that fit the story like The One and The Echo Wife they were more marketed as thrillers but their spec element was incredibly clear to readers from the beginning. But this all being said, in trad pub I’m not even the decider of the genre 😂 in the end, the publisher will pick how they market it. Also I guess part of this is from prior experience. Like my first book was a fantasy and sci-fi blend and many people decry not liking sci-fi so it was marketed heavily as fantasy but the sci-fi elements were made clear in the synopsis. And then I ended up with readers who mentioned that they don’t usually care for sci-fi but loved the book. So maybe I’m just generally shy of leaning too much into a sci-fi element 😅
