Wrought iron gates are strong, secure and many times a focal point of a fence or entrance. Gates are needed for many reasons. The main purpose is to provide a means of access.
There are three main types of wrought iron gates. Single gates, double gates and estate gates.
Single gates are sometimes referred to as man gates. The are made from one leaf or gate panel. Normal widths are between 3-5 feet wide. Allowing access for pedestrian use or small equipment.
When a large open is required, a double gate is installed. Double wrought iron gates are pretty much two single gates that meet in the middle. However, there is no need to have a center support post.
As a result, double gates provide openings in a fence line twice the width of single gates. The most common widths range between 6-10 in width.
Wrought iron estate gates are mainly used to to cover the width of a driveway or road. Estate gates can be one or two leafs depending on the width of the driveway.
Because wrought iron estate gates are heavy, many times they require more than a gate post to hang from. It is common to see estate gates mounted to brick or stone columns and piers.
Wrought iron gates are custom made. Therefore, they can range from very simple designs to the most ornate.
