We are jill and Monae. We just spent the last month exploring the entirety of Portugal, and now we are heading south to Marrakesh Morocco, exploring as a same-sex traveling couple. We absolutely loved our time in Portugal and really appreciate the safety Portugal comes with especially for the LGBTQ+ community. In this video
We traded in our LBGT protection to explore what it's like to be in a country where you can actually go to jail for same-sex activity.
So far we have loved living abroad as a same-sex couple, although it does come with its own set of challenges. As I have said before, we have been very fortunate being in Portugal with its acceptance of visitors and their progressive acceptance of the queer community. But we all know not everywhere is as amazing as Portugal. Traveling as a gay couple can be complicated, and depending on where you are it's important to watch your back and take extra safety precautions.
Morocco is one of these places. It is formally illegal to be gay in Morocco, and up until 2018 violence against women was not illegal. In our previous videos, we drove 20 hours to get to the Sahara Desert for the unique desert camping experience. Camping in the Sahara desert, was quite honestly, not something I even knew was possible until about a week before arriving in Morocco. My concept of the Sahara desert was always known as a hot desolate area of the world that was uninhabitable by humans due to the lack of water. But that’s actually not true. Water is scarce, but there are systematic wells and even a nomadic tribe that lives in the Black Sahara.
On our Sahara desert excursion, we stopped and had the famous Moroccan mint tea with a family from the nomadic tribe living in the Black Sahara. this experience completely took us by surprise.
Up to this point in our “women traveling in Morocco” adventure, our advice for female travelers in Morocco would have been, go and experience it but be careful, until now. Marrakesh Morocco is a place where women are seen as less. We spend five days in Marrakesh and honestly felt so uncomfortable at times we did not want to leave our Airbnb. Constantly men would cat-call us and say extremely provocative things to us.
Traveling to Marrakesh Morocco was truly a humbling experience that we will honestly remember. I hope the people of Marrakech are able to see the value women bring to the world and I hope there will be a time where the women of Marrakesh are seen as equal.
In this video, we shared our honest and true experience of Morocco and more specifically our time in the city of Marrakesh. Change happens with honest and open conversation, and at the time of making this video, we hate our advice to female travelers planning to go to Marrakech.
Traveling to Marrakesh Morocco is 100% possible for women's travels, however, we would encourage anyone to underhand what they want to get out of their journey before leaving. Morocco is not a place if you are looking for a vacation-style getaway. Morocco is a travel destination where you get outside your comfort zone, seek discomfort and experience a culture that is probably very different from your own.
That being said, we are loving travel as an LGBT couple. Feel free to check out some of our other videos for LGBTQ travel vlogs and LGBTQ travel advice sprinkled in.
