WWII B-17 Ball Turret: : The Gunner's Story
The Sperry ball turret was a remarkably practical and innovative design.
It was a spherical chamber made of aluminum and Plexiglas, attached to the fuselage at the aft section of the aircraft. Manned and electrically operated, the turret could move very quickly, revolving a full 360 degrees and pitching down to a 90-degree angle. With these features, it provided a gunner with a wide range of vision and firing ability, covering the entire area below the aircraft.
The ball turret was connected to the fuselage by a shaft that included a hydraulic pump, making it an efficient and essential part of the B-17's defense system. Despite its technological marvel, however, the turret was also one of the most isolated and dangerous positions a crew member could hold
