these are still pretty inexpensive to buy, under $10 Aussie off ebay from China.

This type of lighter is called various things, as you point out in the video and the video's title. However, the actual name for this type of lighter is "Slow Match Lighter" or "Match Lighter" for short. The cord is supposed to be cotton slow match, not just cotton cord.

so is it supposed to be treated with potassium nitrate like proper slow matches?

@@waveman0 You can treat it with potassium nitrate, if you prefer. It works just fine without the treatment. Though, it's not really slow match if not treated. This is the Wikipedia page for "lighter". Just scroll down to "Match lighter" for a little bit about this type of lighter. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lighter

Looks great. Very interesting just thought If that cotton gets wet there could be trouble.

and that would be it's achilles heel I reckon and something I hadn't considered. Though few lighters work when wet (ferro rods being the exception to name one) I suppose the solution would be to keep it in a small waterproof pouch until needed.
