World War II was famous for some of the deadliest weapons ever created. Still, one German weapon stands out in particular. Known as the Flak 18, this anti-aircraft cannon left a trail of dominance over Allied Spitfires and Mustangs. The gun was so effective that the Allied forces dreaded its presence on the battlefield. How did the Germans create such a deadly weapon? And how did it alter the course of the war?
Originally designed as an anti-aircraft cannon, the Flak 18 evolved into the Flak 36 and the infamous Flak 88. The cannon's 17lb shells propelled at over 900 meters per second while hurling a lethal storm of shrapnel over 200 yards in every direction. This terrifying evolution transformed the Flak 88 from a purely anti-aircraft weapon into a multi-role defense weapon, extending its reach from the skies to ground targets. Its staggering range allowed it to devastate Allied tanks like the Sherman and T-34 while crushing fortifications from an incredible distance of 1.5 miles away. The Flak 88's long, imposing barrel became a common sight on the battlefields stretching from the deserts of North Africa to the frozen fronts of Russia.
