I hope your performance went well. My brother performed this for judges at a band festival years ago, and although I had heard him practice it at home, I was floored to hear it whole. His tone and execution were flawless, and he treated the piece with such sensitivity. I was very proud of him. He's gone, now, but this song remains in my memory of him as "his song."

My father was a horn player, good enough for the Ohio State Marching Band in the late '30's, when they devised Script Ohio. He played this song for me when I was a child. I first heard this song performed on the Jackie Gleason show as a Christmas skit. Since then It's remained one of my favorites. Wynton has done Leroy Anderson proud. His feeling for the piece, both in the execution of fine detail and the languishing on notes that needed to be held for the listener, and his incredibly rich tone. is truly a work of art.

A very straight-forward and flawless rendition. Beautiful. I first heard this song played by Rafael Mendez, who is a scary phenomenal trumpeter, and adds a lot of tasteful ruffles and flourishes to this song. It's hard to find a stand-alone recording of him playing this, but it is listed on a full album if you search for it. An old-sounding recording, but still a good listen if you're interested in hearing a nearly forgotten legend.

At least you got a little solo. In the Philip J. Lang (original) band arrangement, there's one trumpet part (the solo), the 2nd cornet gets his 2 bars of glory, the 3rd cornet plays 8 bars with the 2nd, and the 1st cornet doesn't play at all - just has cues for the trumpet and 2nd cornet solos.

I would say it is time to practice. Our stage band won state every year, until band was canceled. This was easy for an 8th grader stage band student in 1977. At that time we played other styles, our teacher was a trumpet player, and made life hell for us all. I had gone and bought a Schilke 13A4A mouth piece. Keep your 7C for this piece, or learn to relax with the 13A4A. My instructor had a fit when he saw the 13A4A. I guess I was supposed to suffer with a 7C all my life.
