You know, there are so many people who talk smack about Wynton's playing, and I think it's really easy to kind of dismiss the prodigies of the world and even resent them. But I have always marveled at how much melody Wynton plays with. There are a pile of guys who can play fast and play good lines at tempo, but man... Wynton doesn't sacrifice the melody, and that makes him more than a mere prodigy. I love his uptempo solos for the fact that it's so much more than just regurgitating rote licks. But my favorite recordings of him are ballads. He's not my favorite improviser, nor is he my favorite trumpeter, but I will stand by saying he's the single most well-rounded player in history. Pure elegance and class! Anyone else feel that?

Yes :) I met him once as a kid and he was gracious and not cocky at all ... not like some people who try to act like the bodyguards of jazz. He did a lot for the music even if his style is just a mixture of guys before him.

I think donna lee was first recorded in 1947, and one of the first recordings of this tune is actually 1946, that motif is the backgrounds

Wynton rarely use that trumpet anymore,...that must be the old cast of JLC. Burning fire trumppet and piano solos! However that high register trumpet sound is missing

I can't imagine you can get solid high notes out of that trumpet, it's probably enough of a workout holding the thing up to your face
