The second half of our Montana-Wyoming trip was spent seeing the middle and southern portions of Yellowstone National Park, visiting Grand Teton National Park, and hiking in the Wind River Range of mountains south of Jackson, Wyoming. The number of parks and hiking trails in the area is simply amazing. First we continued to see Yellowstone’s outstanding thermal areas, including the White Dome Geyser, a huge maybe 15-foot-high dome of white rock from which steam is shooting up. And walking the boardwalk around the Grand Prismatic Spring, the most brilliant and largest of the hot springs in Yellowstone, releasing 500 gallons of hot water are released every minute. And finally to see the iconic Old Faithful Geyser which was about 15 minutes late erupting. Then out of Yellowstone and spending a night in between it and Grand Teton at the Headwaters Lodge and Cabins, the only place I could find “in the parks” lodging. We next saw Grand Teton National Park with its outstanding beauty, including the Snake River and the jagged Teton Mountains. We hiked to one of the prettiest lakes anywhere, Taggart Lake at 6,902 feet just below the South, Middle (Grand) and North Tetons. After Grand Teton and a night in Jackson, we drive to the 100-mile-long Wind River Range for a perfect hike to what’s called “Sacred Rim” viewpoint. Said to be the best day hike in the entire range. A granite outcrop looks down around 1,600 feet to a deep valley of lakes and waterfalls and to the high peaks of the Wind Rivers in the distance. After the Wind Rivers, back to Bozeman and a night with Roger and Susie and home to Tennessee. For photos of the trip, see: www.smugmug.co...
