The LHS already has a common denominator. Therefore you can add x/7 + 2x/7 = 3x/7 directly. Thus 3x/7 = 2. Multiplying both sides by the reciprocal of 3/7 gives 7/3 · 3x/7 = 7/3 · 2. Therefore, x = 14/3 ◼

That is how I did it, I am 61 and this was how I was thought. Modern algebra makes things more complex however the answer is the same
Your explanation was a bit more complicated, than I expected. I did get to the correct answer, but I approached it with my first thought being to reach X standing alone on one side of the equal sign and numbers on the other, revealing the answer with as few steps as possible. So my goal was 1/1X=blank. You have stated you can do anything, as long as it's done on both sides of the equation. So, I solved as follows. My mind changed the equation to 7/3 × {1/7X + 2/7X} = 2/1 × 7/3= 1X = 14/3 Maybe written this way 1/7X + 2/7X = 2 (3/7X = 2) 7/3 × 3/7X = 2/1 × 7/3 X = 14/3 I do tend to solve simple math in my head, which leaves out those in ().. Thank you as always.

If you had good teachers back in the 60s and 70s and learned the Commutative Laws of + & x, the Associative Laws of + & X, the Distributive Law, the 0 Laws, reciprocals, and order of operations, you're good to go even in your head. I can remember having those principles drive into us until we could do problems in our sleep. So at our age, our neurons are still firing that info across our synapses. We need a math party of boomers over 65! We used the entire Dolciani math series in HS from 9-12 grades. 4 years of math were mandatory. I am homeschooled my youngest son (now 34) and used Saxon math; it was ok, but not as good as Dolciani. If today's students could find some vintage Dolciani math books, it might help them understand whichever level of math they're encountering; those text books seemed very clear, concise, and understandable. Anyone else use that series? Your thoughts on it?

I have never come across “cross products” before. Can someone explain to me why they work? I have a hard job remembering things like this, unless I know how they work.
@russelleverson9915
Жыл бұрын
Cross products or "cross multiplying" works because it just combines a couple of logical steps into one step. Example: if we were solving 4/x = 3/5. We COULD do the following steps (or similar steps in a different order) Step 1: multiply both sides by x, to get 4 x/x = 3x/5. That is 4 =3x/5 then step 2: multiply both sides by 5, to get (4 times 5) = 3x. That is, 20 = 3x Then continue with the next step: to solve for x. When cross multiplying, we are doing step 1 and step 2 at the same time. To generalize (prove that it always works) for a/b = c/d . That is, always gives ad = bc Use the first method: step 1 then step 2 AND Use the second method: cross multiply ("take the cross product"). You will see that they are two different ways to get to the same place. I hope that's helpful

So, why not teach something far more easier than this? For one: If you multiple the whole equation by 7, you’ll be left with x+2x=2(7). If your student are afraid of fractions teach them to get rid of them as fast as possible. Two: Why use proportions? If you are dealing with 3x/7=2, why divide both sides by 3/7? Multiply by using the reciprocal! 3/7(7/3)=1:: 3x/7(7/3)=x. This is your one step solution to the situation at hand.

14/3 is the normal way to write a number like this as a fraction. The mixed number format isn't really used anywhere except in schools when children are first learning about division and remainders. When you're using mathematics to actually do things, when you calculate a value it's usually because you need to use it for something. There's no point converting something like 14/3 into 4⅔, because if you're going to use it in another expression or enter it into a computer or calculator, you're just going to have to convert it straight back to 14/3 again. There's also the fact that mixed number notation is a bit weird in the first place. In mathematics, when you write two terms next to each other it means multiplication. But with a mixed number 4⅔ we aren't multiplying the 4 and the ⅔, we're adding them.
