Really helpful - the rotate around the center point at zero/zero and absolute was the part I was missing. My machine is a Laguna IQ pro with a 2x4 bed. I tried designing things in Aspire, say 1' x 4', just in Aspire with the x as 1' - made my head hurt trying to visualize things on screen. Possible for simple things, but not fun. So I changed the material orientation and rotated everything manually - not fun and prone to mistakes. Your method is simple and clear - thanks!

thanks for this! I am setting up my modified CNC 6040 and have it sideways just like your old tool. It made sense to me to call the long axis X, but ALL the forums call that the Y. But, no it's not a Y....it's the long axis that moves the whole gantry!

Good info. Facing my gantry the x is side to side (short axis) y is front to back (long axis). For years I have always use the x axis for the longest side of the design. I have changes my design practice to always make the long side the y axis.

Could you possibly do a quick video on how to set the material up on the machine when you are ready to cut? I've learned a lot from your videos, as i'm very new to the cnc world. Thank you

This reminds me of: Who's on First? What? No, Who's on First? What? This just scrambled my brain... I hope Z is up n down... X is Horiz. left n right... and Y is Front to Back. Now, you have me wondering how Fusion 360 handles it. Prior to this, the thought never entered my mind. :) Mark, thank you very much.

Oh, that's our shortstop! Thanks, Joe - lol. I didn't get into it at all in this video, but I did mention it in Live Q&A #22 - the whole X, Y, and Z thing comes from the Cartesian Coordinate System. If you really want to fry your brain, Google it and hang on. At first your head will spin, then you'll slap yourself and say, "OH! I knew this!"

I believe I understand everything your discussing.. however one thing I don't thing you discussed,. Is what if the person doesn't have it wired properly. It's all good to say your x axis is side to side while in front of of it, but I think there is a chance there some who have wired it with the side to side wired with the servos plugged into the Y axis. Your video's are always bang on, I think this one is just didn't cover the possibility that someone might issue a. G0 X100. And it travels on the Y axis because of the wiring
@MarkLindsayCNC

Please don't think I'm being flip with this answer, but if that's the case, the thing to do is wire it properly. If that means disconnect and reconnect the motors/servos properly, then that's what needs to be done. It's not just you and me that needs the X and Y in the proper orientation. When the controller sends a signal to the X axis motor or servo, it needs to go to the X axis motor or servo. Trying to mentally compensate for wiring it incorrectly instead of getting into the control box enclosure and making sure the motors/servos are connected to the correct drivers will lead to nothing but problems. In short - if it's wired incorrectly, stop and fix it. Thanks for checking out the video!

@@MarkLindsayCNC Nope I don't believe your wrong when your saying it should be wired right. I was pointing out that you never mention that it should be wired properly. Ie. Sending a X code should result in the X motors turni g.
@MarkLindsayCNC

Well, to be honest, it never occurred to me to even need to mention it should be wired properly. I think it goes without saying. It's easy to come up with "what if" scenarios. The point remains that this isn't about any machine, no matter if it's wired right, wrong, or even plugged in. It's all about the Cartesian Coordinate system.

A question can I use UGS and run two separate machines, not at the same time, and will it save settings for both. My CNC and my Drawbot.
@MarkLindsayCNC
2 жыл бұрын
I don't know anything about UGS, as I've never used it. Generally speaking, however, there are so many settings per machine, it would be very difficult and cumbersome to go back and change settings for each different machine every time you want to use it. I don't know if there's a support forum or community for UGS, but you might look for one and ask if there's a way to create different machine profiles for use with different machines. I know with Mach3, I can create a new machine profile and set up that profile to run another machine. When I load Mach3, it asks me which machine I want to run. I select the machine, and the profile to operate that machine is loaded. Mach4 will do the same thing.

Those are 2 of the different machines I've had over the last 5 years. Both photos were taken from the same spot in the shop. The first machine was installed with the gantry running side to side due to space limitations. The second (my current machine) was installed with the gantry running front to rear because I had more space. The point is, no matter which way the machine is facing, the axes remain the same. X runs side to side, Y runs front to rear.
