Coming off my "wash" with JIM 85, I tackle this shoo-in X-men 101 that was in desperate need of a clean and press. Published in 1976, this book features the 1st appearance of Phoenix and iconic cover art by Dave Cockrum. This particular copy was graded by CGC as a 5.0 with White pages. The grader notes state "heavy bends to cover", which when you see the book un-encapsulated, you will see why. I picked this copy up for a little below GPA, which is always great especially when you think a book can be bumped and a grade increase results in a significant value change. Overall, I thought is was a great improvement. One note about the video - due to a camera error, I lost the video of cleaning the front cover. That's okay because I think the major work was on the back! In all, I did three rounds of pressing as well as work with the tack iron and steel roller ball and spine work with the Hanger 9 iron to address residual spine ticks. It was a lot of work but I think it paid off! "Hot off the press" I sent it over to my buddy Rich Henn to facilitate signing by writer Chris Claremont at NYCC 2021. The video closes with the final signed book before being sent to CGC. If you like signed books and have never heard of him, check out Rich Henn on the CGC forum, Instagram, or FaceBook. He is an experienced presser and an awesome person to work with for obtaining witnessed signatures. He's highly trusted in the industry and I couldn't recommend more!
As always, let me know your thoughts on the video as I am continually trying to improve them. Hopefully this one has better audio and background music for the time-lapse!
