"Most other nations don’t allow a terrorist to be their leader.” “Yet so many allow their leaders to be terrorists". Loved this episode. This show is a lot better the further it strays from canon. I suspect they'll play around more with the notion of this being an alternate timeline. For example Cable's name no longer being Nathan *Christopher* Summers. Cyclops not being brave enough to be there with his son as he's taken to the future (especially considering how much that specifically is a big deal in the original story), and having two time travellers so far. I actually liked that they leaned into the squick factor with Rogue and Magneto. Make it uncomfortable. It does also reflect Xavier and Gabrielle Haller, but I don't think that is established in this continuity. I also loved finally realising what the title refers to as Gambit is making his last charge. Great episode. Unfortunate it'll be mostly fixed through time travel, but it's great while we're there.

Even though I knew that this series was going to be more mature because of the TV-14 rating, I had no idea how the show was going to be handled especially when the key writers and directors of X-Men 97 didn't work on the original. While it is true that X-Men 97 feels more serious and fast pace than the original, it seems to have use the comics and the Night of the Sentinels two-parter as the template for the shows overall tone. Speaking of tone, I like how it is serious like God Loves, Man Kills graphic novel, yet Marvel/Disney didn't go over bored with the mature settings like DC/HBO did with HBO Max Young Justice seasons. Because of how well the series balance the fine line between mature themes and senseless gore, I hope X-Men 97 adapts God Loves, Man Kills.

I'm personally devastated by Gambit dying. He was always a personal favorite, and I was always irked he didn't get more comic time (at least when I was borrowing X-men comics in the early 90's on the schoolyard!). The other deaths made sense narratively, to keep the stakes high, but I'm frustrated that there never seems to be an end in sight for mutant suffering - I can hope for happy endings, but they always seem to end quickly and brutally. Poor Jean Gray, Rogue and Storm - no happy endings for any of our ladies.

@@darlhiatt8136 Rogue was an adult in both these shows, and it seems to happen after she takes CM's powers so she's at least an adult when they meet, although she's probably not over 20, since she looks to be in her early 30's at the oldest (probably a fair bit younger) in the old show. For some reason Rogue gets paired up with older guys in a lot of the shows. In X-men Evolution she's in high school and gets together with Gambit who is an adult in the show, and in Wolverine and the X-men she has a thing for Logan who is a lot older, she does have something with Gambit in that show as well, but he seems to be closer in age. Even in the live action movies she does seem to at least have been interested in Wolverine at some point. I guess it has something to do with those versions of Rogue acting like she's older than she is, trying to be independent, but it comes off as a bit creepy. I mean if they're adults it's technically fine. But a 20 something with a guy who was 6-12 during the early 40's is a bit too much if you ask me. I'm not sure how I feel about the same with wolverine, since he suffers a bit from the anime problem. He's so old that you can't really judge by his age, but have to go with how he acts and looks instead. Which doesn't always make it better.

This woman for much of her young adult/adult life has never been able to physically touch anyone; it must be maddening at times because she loves Gambit and wants that physical connection that we all do. So when she and Magneto figure out their powers cancel each other out leaving Rogue to touch him, i can understand that draw, that want. But in the end, she realizes what they have goes deeper than skin. And the ending... im still not ok with that WandaVision level gut punch. 10/10

I'm a huge Invincible fan, but no, Ep5 topped anything that series has done so far. It's a damn cartoon, about a 1/2hr, and it is one of the most intense pieces of television I've ever seen. It's a fantastic blend of the old cartoons and the comics lore, and right up there with the final episode of MASH, the season 1 finale of Due South, and the season 5 finale of Supernatural. It's on par with shows like Orphan Black, and made more impact than most movies I've seen in years. Take Magneto: you see him be a hero, trying to save lives. Then the horror he's facing kicks him in the PTSD, and he starts lashing out like the old, vilainous Master of Magnetism. And his final act is to comfort a child in German, because what he's going trough has taken him back to where it all began for him, seeing his people eradicated by an unstoppable force for simply existing. I'm raving about it, but I think it earns it. This looks like a kid's show, but it's for the grown up children who watched the show where they were young, and now can deal with the complexity of really great story telling.

I personally love the relationship aspect of episode 5 so much. Not only because I'm always here for soap opera level drama from the x-men but because all of the messy decisions being made felt so rooted in the characters rather than just drama for the sake of drama. Scott being drawn to Madelyn because of their shared loss, Jean feeling adrift and seeking comfort in Logan, Logan recognizing that and telling her she's meant to be with Scott. The betrayal and frustration is all so well written and compelling. And the same is true for Magneto, Rogue, and Gambit. There are no easy answers just the messiness of human relationships. I feel like so much of the shipping talk surrounding this show is centring on who did who wrong which feels like a narrow way of engaging with the show imo.

It was handled in a way that genuinely make sense for the maturity of this series. It is another way in which Eric is a man with good intentions, but often handles things in the wrong way... I look forward to see what's next.

Gambit was hot wearing that suit. Gambit dying was shocking but I’m positive he’ll come back. I do think Mystique will show up before the season ends. Is Scott going on a mini villain arc?!

I watched the entire original series in preparation for '97. When I reached this episode I texted my best friend "you have to watch this series". He said he wanted to watch the original first and I said "don't bother, just watch the new one". He was born in 88 so he watched a lot of it when he was a kid, we both know what the X-Men are. The context you need this series provides. I just needed someone to talk about this episode.

You can see how the show can benefit from a better budget because when I heard the song that Rogue and Magneto danced to, I was thinking that it sounded quite like Ace Of Base, and when I heard the lyrics turned out to be their song Happy Nation! But it is not only an era appropriate song, but also thematically relevant, as the lyrics mention an idyllic nation but also includes the line "a man will die, but not his ideas" which became more relevant with the end of the episode. Marvel is really fulfilling everyone's dream we this show, not only is faithful to its original show but also elevates it, really great job from the people at Marvel animation.

The Jean/Madeline is one of the most "just be a trio!" dynamics. They are both mentally the person he married.

Maybe, but I feel like it would have fallen apart anyway just because of how Scott can't seem to treat the 2 Jeans the same.

They aren’t. It’s where comics and sci fi in general can’t be mapped to the real world and decency. No one has any conception of how effed up this would be to go through. Even a secret twin somehow being involved in a relationship isn’t the same as this. Jean is the one he fell in love with, but Madeline is the one he married (and even that only probably) and definitely the one he had a kid with and was planning a future for (even giving up the X-men). Both deserve to be with him identically but their relationships are not identical.

In this show yes but when I go by how they are in the comics, Madeline and Jean other then looks, with Madeline being a clone, their personalities are very different.

No, they're not. They're identical; that doesn't mean that they're not different people. Uniqueness is not a prerequisite to be a moral actor.

I'm kinda glad they didn't try to write around the whole Magneto/Rogue thing because if I'm to be honest the messyness of it is the only thing that made it kind of interesting? It's completely understandable from Rogue's perspective; older mentor type guy whom she *can* touch? 100% why she's into it, but it seriously casts a harsh light on Magneto himself, because it's hard to not see it as him taking advantage of Rogue. Then you bring in his last stand, and his sacrifice, and pretty much you have a study of Magneto as a very, *very* complex person, to a realm far more immediate than ideology.

Episode 5 touched on so many emotions. Rogue being reunited with Nightcrawler, Gambit dealing with the possible budding romance between Rogue and Magneto, Magneto dealing with being selected to rule a nation, Rogue thinking Physical love is what she needs and than realizing it's more than that, Rogue not being able to help her brother, Magneto try to defend everyone, but ultimately failing, Gambit'd sacrifice and Rogue's reaction. This episode left me in tears at the end and it wasn't Gambit's death it was Rogue's reaction to it. Now the other questions is everyone who died going to stay dead? It's comics and no one really ever stays dead. We know Cable is involved so maybe they'll do like the Season 2 episode Time Fugitives; in which the X-Men died, but Cable came back and changed the outcome. So possibly we will see that again. Now the big bad. Since the attack was based on the storyline E is for Extinction many people are assuming it's Cassandra Nova as the big bad behind the attack, but X-Men the animated series (X-Men 97) has been known to mix around storyline. The Cable's deep involvement in the series so far with us witnessing his birth to his parents sending him to the future to hopefully cure him from the technorganic virus to him coming back to try to warn everyone about the attack, plus Madelyn and Jean being Psychically attacked makes me think of Stryfe. Another possible villain to this but less likely and I only say because of the Sentinels is Onslaught. The psychic attacks, the Sentinels being involved. What if in the last Episode of the original series when Magneto used his magnetic powers to try to boost Xavier's telepathy to try to cure him, it resulted in the creation of Onslaught. Different from what happened in the comics, but I can see them using that. Oh and final note regarding when Madelyn took over from Jean, the clues have been there. She at least took over in Season 5 and it was definitely Madelyn in the episode Graduation Day. Madelyn wears her hair loose in costume and Jean wears it in a ponytail. So when we see Jean's hairstyle has changed in costume, that's when Madelyn took her place.

The part I loved the most about episode 5 is the interview highlighting the miscommunication of both Scott and jean How when they are recalling the events of one of their previous dates they both made assumptions about how the other felt after the Phoenix and the fact it implies that they never cleared up these assumptions they had towards each other

While "Mojovision" was a slightly lighter episode in tone, I feel that it addressed important touchstones that can apply to anyone experiencing loss and growing older. "Remember It" ripped my heart out, chewed it up, and spit it back out, and I want seconds! Every episode so far has knocked it out of the park, but this one hit some company's satellite!

4 was great as a Jubilee fan, it was nice to see her get a spotlight in this season. And yeah, sparks definitely flew after the fade out. 5 was just ... the best. I'm a Gambit/Rogue shipper so I loved their interaction & relationship stuff. And Gambit in the finale, I'll say it, he puts Levi Ackerman to shame. Loved the cameos throughout Genosha & the cross between Hellfire Innner Circle & Krakoan council. I can't wait to see where they go with the rest of the episodes.

Rogue did gambit so dirty this entire season, and especially in this episode and I’m so incredibly upset that she’s not going to have the opportunity to apologise to gambit. He deserved so much better. He was so mature and loyal to her the whole season, and she separates from him and spits on their entire relationship, then makes out with magneto that same night in front of everyone (including gambit). After all that gambit could have easily ran to some stranger for comfort or revenge, but didn’t. AND THEN he sacrifices himself without a second thought to protect her. And rogue doesn’t have an opportunity to apologise to him.
