The Taklamakan Desert (Uyghur: تەكلىماكان قۇملۇقى), located in the center of the Tarim Basin in southern Xinjiang, China, is the largest desert in China and the world's tenth largest desert. It is also the second largest mobile desert globally. Stretching approximately 1000 kilometers from east to west and 400 kilometers from north to south, it covers an area of 330,000 square kilometers. The average annual precipitation is less than 100 millimeters, dropping to as low as four to five millimeters in some areas. However, the average annual evaporation is exceptionally high, ranging from 2500 to 3400 millimeters.
The desert features pyramid-shaped sand dunes that rise over 300 meters above the plains. Strong winds can lift sand walls that reach up to three times their height. The dunes are constantly shifting due to the wind's influence. Despite the harsh conditions, the desert supports sparse vegetation with roots that are significantly more developed underground than aboveground, allowing them to access groundwater efficiently. Some animals in the desert exhibit summer dormancy.
On June 2, 2022, China's first grade highway crossing the Taklamakan Desert-the Tarim Desert Highway "Zero Carbon Demonstration Project"-officially commenced operation.
