I find that most people don't realize this but you are going to get better distance at ground level if you point your antenna straight up and down. When you had the hangar behind you, you had the antenna at an angle which was not lined up properly. That will have a great affect on your distance. I'm glad you like the radios as I'm looking at purchasing a set for myself. Thanks for doing the video!

In this video you used channel four for communication. Channel 4 is FRS channel and most likely your radio transmits with limit of 0.5 watt which explains the range limit. If you switch to GMRS channel (from 15 to 22) then your radio will transmit in full power mode which can be from 2 watt up to 5 watt. The range will improve dramatically, but in this case in US you have to pay for GMRS license. It is not expensive though.

I would recommend an MURS radio for your location and terrain. Try the Retevis RT27V. They are 5-channel MURS radios programmed with FREE software. (2) radio pair is $56.00 on Amazon. Or if you want the ultra tough Motorola MURS version: RMM2050. (1) radio is $189.00. MURS is VHF license-free at 2-watts with a Fixed-Antenna. So both radios comply with and are type accepted on FCC's Part 95. The FCC ID is stamped on the inside of the radios. I'm not violent towards my radios or equipment. Nor do I have any habits of dropping radios or exposing them to the elements. So the RT27V is a better, cheaper match for me. Based on your needs, you might want to weigh the toughness factor alittle more. The Retevis RT27V probably has similar physical characteristics as your Midland radios. If you need something tougher, the RMM2050 might be a better, admittedly, more expensive unit. Both radios are programmed by FREE software that you easily download from their websites. OASN: The RT27V is programmed by Kenwood-style Baofeng cables. Works with quite a few of them. The RMM2050 is programmed with a proprietary cable designed for their RM series of radios. The cables are not included with either radio. I believe the RMM2050 can be programmed with a regular micro-USB to standard USB cable for your computer-to-cell phone. I don't have a RMM2050 to verify this. OASN: If you would want an FRS radio that provides a hint of privacy, the Retevis RT27 (FRS model) has a built-in scrambler (8 options). The RT27 (FRS model) is type accepted and has an FCC ID that was granted in late 2017 before the revised rules were implemented by the FCC. Retevis beat the deadline. The deadline was Dec 27th, 2017. Retevis got their RT27 (FRS model) type accepted and approved in Oct 2017. So the RT27 (FRS model) is one of the last FRS radios to be allowed to have a SCRAMBLE or SCRAMBLER mode built into it. Any FRS radios submitted to the FCC for type acceptance after Dec 27th, 2017 will be REJECTED if they contain a SCRAMBLE or SCRAMBLER mode. The FRS version of the RT27 is fully legal (FCC ID stamped on the inside of the radio) and has the scrambler option, if you need it. Granted, the scrambler is simple voice inversion technology. It has 8 options available for it's scramble mode. OASN: The Motorola RMM2050's software (MURS) has 5 channels with (4) scramble modes available. The RMM2050 received it's Part 95 type acceptance well before the FCC deadline of Dec of 2017. I don't know if some additional privacy is important to you or not. For some, the short range of units provides some privacy. For others, they may want the slightly enhanced peace of mind of enhanced privacy. The RT27V has no scramble or scrambler mode. It does have something called: DCS Encryption. Which alters the DCS privacy codes. Supposedly, this prevents other MURS type (from different manufacturers) radios from opening the squelch on RT27V radios even if they are using the same DCS privacy code. Supposedly this even works with both DCS non-inverted and inverted privacy codes. So basically, if other radio users on your channel decide to use exactly the same privacy code as you or your group, you still won't hear them on your radio. It blocks them out. This DCS Encryption feature is optional on the RT27V. The Motorola RMM2050 does not support this feature, nor does the BTECH MURS-V1 radio. The BTECH MURS-V1 radio is another MURS radio I would recommend with a Part 95 FCC ID and fully type accepted. It's usually $54.00 each on Amazon. Programmed by the FREE software called: CHIRP and uses any of the Kenwood-Style / Baofeng type programming cables. Hope this might help you in some way. You can search for the FCC IDs for these radios. They are on file and a matter of public record.

You must have had it set at 6 or higher. It ranges from most sensitive at 1 to 9 at lowest sensitivity. When I try it at 6 or under you can easily key the mic by just lightly blowing on it. These are only FRS radios. GMRS FRS Dual-service radios Some manufacturers received approval to market radios that were certified under both FRS and GMRS, which allowed users to use one device to operate on FRS channels, which does not require a license, and GMRS, which requires an FCC license. In 2017, the FCC changed its rules to stop equipment authorization of FRS dual-service radios and it changed the rules for both FRS and GMRS such that existing radios would be reclassified as either FRS or GMRS to remove the confusion of whether a license was needed for legal operation. Specifically, if you have a radio that was sold as a dual-service FRS/GMRS radio and it is limited to the channels and power limits provided under the “Data” tab on this page, then that device can be operated as an FRS device without a licensing requirement. However, if the device exceeds the limits under the “Data” tab or includes any of the following channels (467.5500, 467.5750, 467.6000, 467.6250, 467.6500, 467.6750, 467.7000, and 467.7250 MHz), then it is a GMRS device and an individual FCC license is needed to operate the device other than on the channels and with the bandwidth and power limits shown under the “Data” tab. « Previous

This model is convenient to use with the USB charging and only taking three batteries instead of four. The rechargeable battery is 1000mamp instead of 700 on the gxt1000. For the same cost as the gxt1000, this model has two watts of transmitting power and the gxt1000 puts out 5 watts on high power. They claim 38 miles on two watts and 36 miles on 5 watts? Go figure. I've owned both and both are high quality radios but the gxt1000 talks further but the batteries last less. For distance, stick with the gxt1000.

Yeah the public needs to get used to the two being separate services although they share the same frequencies. The Federal Communications Commission messed up years ago when the FRS band was created, they allowed manufacturers to develop and sell the combo bubble pack radio's that operated on both FRS and GMRS with the assumption that users would know the difference or even care. Now with the new FCC rules for personal radio communications, they are trying to fix their mistake and push for manufacturers to design FRS only radio's while doing the same for GMRS. We should see more FRS only radio's come into the market with the power increase of 2 watts (ERP). I always try to promote Midland products as I have been using their gear for years with great results. Nice Job on the video.
