Correction re: Xenon aggression: There are large variations in the strength and frequency of Xenon invasions from one game to another, seemingly correlated with the game's seed. A lot of X4 players, myself included, have labeled those variations as a seed's "Xenon aggression setting". An Egosoft dev and a prominent modder (edit: two devs) have chimed in to clarify that this isn't an actual setting in the game's code. The variation is real, and it is influenced in part by parameters set by the game seed. However, it is also heavily influenced by emergent in-game factors unrelated to the seed, and therefore it isn't accurate to call this a "setting". For more info, see my conversation with Ketraar below, and my new video on the topic (linked at the bottom of the description). Thank you @Ketraar and @Shuulleecho for the clarification.

Yeah I'm a little bummed out they aren't doing better in my game. It's my first time with the series and am absolutely blown away by how incredible this game is. At first they seemed like a massive threat and I was terrified and exited but they seem to be slowing down a bit. I'm hoping now that I have the economy to start to face them head on that some of those good old emergent factors kick in and they start doing better. After seeing this video I worry I may have overpowered myself a bit thinking the later game was going to get insanely harder. With any luck I'm just being naive and I'll have a big challenge ahead! Next time I will for sure not roll right in Terran space as so far it's been totally secure. Good place to learn the game though for sure!

@CptSnuggles07 Let me note two things. 1. That prominent modder is a dev too, though I still struggle to see myself as one, but I digress. 2. "and it is influenced in part by parameters set by the game seed", See this is can be misleading, the seed does not change any faction stance or balance as such. Xenon dont suddenly decide in one seed to invade system and not in a different seed. It definite starting positions of some things, which for the Xenon are not much, since they only have Power Plants as production stations, shipyards and wharves will always start at some (rough) location, but surely always in same system. Resources fill percentage can vary at the start, for both stations and regions (minerals for example). What will impact outcomes is any subsequent dice rolls on all the 1000s of entities that make a choice and having run dozens of long time test (150h+) with the same seed, I can attest that there are some outcomes that appear more often then others, but hardly any are the same. But even then, sample size is very low compared to the sheer amount of possibilities, so we usually try to look for pattern of change and aim for "stuff not collapsing". Anyway long story short, there is no shortcut to allow a magic button to define an outcome, even if we would say push a button and Xenon start with 50% more ships, its not guaranteed that it would make much difference since they still would need to rebuild the ships when they die, so now we would need to also change the Xenon economy, but that is tied to map regions, etc etc...

@@Ketraar Thank you for the detailed reply! I always appreciate getting direct input from the devs. I know your time is valuable, but I'd love to get just a little more info that I can share with my viewers. Originally, I had thought of "Xenon aggression" as one or more parameters in the code that would actively influence Xenon behavior in the game. Not leading to a predetermined outcome, but directly producing a certain overall behavior pattern, similar to the "AI Aggressiveness" setting in Stellaris. Since the comments from you and Shuul, I've shifted to thinking that there are no "active" parameters and that the only seed-related code that influences Xenon behavior is universe generation, such as fleet/station starting positions and resource fill percentage, sometimes leading to certain Xenon clusters being relatively strong or relatively weak at the start. That would then, potentially, lead to a "snowball" effect, with early victories/defeats for the strong/weak clusters making further victories/defeats more likely, etc. etc., but again not guaranteeing any particular outcome, and with a decreasing effect as time passes. This would be comparable to the "Advanced Empires" setting in Stellaris. Is that a fair comparison, or is even that line of thinking incorrect? Also, for an unrelated experiment, I've been running multiple 19-hour tests within a single seed, which has gotten me thinking about your job, sample sizes, and how hard it must be to playtest X4 with its near-infinite number of mostly-random variations. So your "stuff not collapsing" comment makes perfect sense, and thanks for your hard work!
@Ketraar
28 күн бұрын
@@CptSnuggles07 yes the start conditions is indeed the "setting", but would just add that its not just the Xenon own "seed roll" but any faction and their start setting, will have an impact. So its even worse in the sense that many more permutations are possible that influence outcome. There are some balancing things that can have influence of course and as mentioned we do try to look into improve these things as more stuff is added and or changed. If you want to do a fun experiment that may surprise you is to do a test run with CoH enabled and then one with same seed but CoH disabled. Chances are high you will get interesting difference in places you might not expect.

For theme run, you can make a lore run and faction choice. I will try to make it simple. Spear of the Patriarch (split) --- Your goal is to take over other split faction and take 50% of land from argon. You also kill any Boron you see and later in game you attack their sectors and wipe 90% of them. Also you totaly ignore xenon threat. Fires of Defeat (split) --- Your main goal is to take revenge on big ship, but later you join the argon by fixing your reputation with them to take out the other split faction. Unlike other split faction, you take out xenon treat. You will have to do, collect ship questline for split to take revenge after. The Young Gun (argon) --- your main goal is to get to a quest where you cause bouth paranid factions go in perma war, while helping boron rebuild and defend them from split. The Dedicated Warrior (paranid) -- here is reverse and you do the quest to merge bouth paranid factions. Later in game you take out half of argon navy and also invade terrans. The Untested Explorer (argon) -- your main goal is to explore everything and visit planet earth (wich is pain) The Accomplished Scientist -- this lets you skip boso boring quest and well its more for sandbox.. no main goal in this mode The Unworthy Entrepreneur (teladi) --- you try to make friends with everyone (exept xenon and kha'ak) and later in game you start bombing faction specific buildings, so they are forced to buy from you. Terran Cadet (terran) --- genocide every faction pretty much Project Genesis (terran) --- protect every faction from xenon at all costs. Ignore their warning for entering their zone and move with fleet to destroy xenons. Smuggler's Paradise (pirate start) -- create a illegall goods economy and take out pirate competition Stranded (pirate start) --- you keep stealing from factions, but you dont piss them to much. Your goal is to make a large pirate king fleet of different factions ships. Emergence --- help boron factions to re-build and later defend them from split invasions. Also push xenons back as much as you can. Queen's Herald (boron) --- help argon to defend from paranid and split. Help teladi with xenons.

My favorite early game cheese so far: Get the free Odysseus from Faulty Logic and sell it after stripping it down -> use the money to buy a Shuyaku Vanguard and bring it to the VIG shipyard -> keep buying Marines and selling any recruits you got to get a refund for them and then buy some more, until your Shuyaku is full with Veteran-tier marines -> remotely fly the Shuyaku next to the Erlking while you're out of sector to avoid pissing off the VIG -> board the Erlking and get the Shuyaku out of there. Then just wait for a bit and congratulations, you now have what is essentially an XL freighter that is ludicrously fast for its size and cargo space, will never be touched by pirates, and has enough crew capacity to board just about anything. You know, like that shiny Asgard the Terran Intervention fleet keeps flying into neutral sectors... >:D The best part is, if you don't need the Shuyaku at that point in time you can just strip it down and sell it afterwards to get your initial investment back, essentially making the Erlking completely free. Except for the boarding crew, you should probably keep that one around.

One thing I'd say to everyone not yet a player, and many who are today players of X4, get this IF you are willing to just chuck 20-40 hours of saved actual wall hours as merely a learning exercise and possibly do it again. If you can't afford that time, don't bother, it is a time sink if it clicks for you, so not usable for you in the situation you are, and if it doesn't click, then you wasted your money. I've spent LITERAL DAYS, like 24 hour periods totalled up, just kicking the Xenon down enough to allow the NPC races to merely exist before they get roflstomped by the Xenon. But that is a poor run and I didn't know the map at all, so I pootled around in an area while the Xenon Zerg Rushed both the Argons and Teladi before I saw them. But if you can sink that time into it, and it will be a lot like actual war, long whiles of boredom and brief periods of excitement BEGGING to be bored instead, you don't necessarily care if the DLCs are on sale, just buy them to extend your play. NOTE: you can disable the new map and race if you go to Settings-Extensions and set it to "Off", by default they will turn on in installing, but it can overwhelm you, and if you don't get to Split space, there's a good chance that the Xenon have ended the split before you got there. There's some changes to stop that, but since it is not letting them have only a hobson's choice of "Go Xenon Sector running" vs "Slowly die off via attrition". There's more stuff in Split space, but their traders will still decide for absolutely no reason to run through multiple Xenon sectors and get blow up, losing the cargo hold AND the cost of making that trader, which it was carrying materials to build....

This goes to show that X4 is actually pretty easy. Most of the difficulty comes from learning the UI and game mechanics. But i shall add one extra note on difficulty i learned. Reduces difficulty: Avoid using L/XL ships. They are horribly cost-ineffective. Spending the same credits on fighters instead gives you vastly more firepower, survivability, and mobility. Especially compared to the DLC destroyers. You can buy 10 Osaka, or buy at least 500 fighters, for the same amount of credits. The latter gives you much more bang for your buck. Similar for traders and miners. Medium-size ships are so, so much more cost effective, its not even fair to compare. Credit for credit, medium miners and traders are somewhere around 3x more cost effective than large. Not only do you usually get at least 2x the cargo capacity, but also much more throughput. Especially in areas with highways.

You can still get a budgeted start, and one option is to get a start that skips getting the HQ. But you can unlock it and then unlock it, and any research you did for Boso, in a budgeted game start, skipping that early game grind. Not that there is much grind. Note that there was not really a nerf as such for drops, they were restructured. Unlike before you now get more consistent drops from types of ships, like military ships are dropping the more "militaristic" wares where civilians drop the more generic wares. This does in fact increase the drop rate for specific wares, since they are no longer competing for a drop chance in a huge list.

As the others said, there's no in-game way to see it directly. You'll get a rough idea after about 10 in-game hours, when the Xenon "limiter" turns off and they start to invade with the full quantity/frequency determined by their aggression level. Generally, I'd say if all factions are holding their territory, the aggression level is low; if only the Split are losing, it's normal; if ARG, ANT, and/or HOP are losing too, it's high; if the Teladi are losing, it's very high; and if the Terrans are losing, it's apocalyptic. That's just a generalization; there's lots of RNG involved in territorial gains/losses.

You definitely know when it rolls Xenon max aggression. My current game I actually had to retreat from a few sectors as staying there was uneconomical. Of course it doesn't help that the Split keep building freighters to throw into the fires of Tharka's Cascade...you know, instead of warships. Why would you want those when you're getting steamrolled??? I left them to it, Zyarth only have two sectors left, Teladi have lost their northern most sectors HC 1 is half gone despite looking like a lawn of laser towers, and HoP is down to 3 sectors. The only ray of sunshine atm is that the Terrans seem to be holing their own...but I haven't seen an "intervention force" fleet anywhere outside their space in a while.... I wish I could go back and and have my first ever playthrough for the second time. If I start a new game right now, in that same time I can probably get myself a destroyer or two in that same amount of time, as it's not hard. Make friends with split or terran, get a frigate full of marines and some good guns and plasma turrets and find a SCA destroyer. @@1110jesse Read the flaming manual. Seriously. It is odd how many people refuse to do the manual OR tutorials, insisting "I don't DO tutorials!!!!" then complain it isn't explained. Now, on release, and for most of the pre-3.0 update, the manual was missing a LOT, and the game also had bugs, but they also disagreed with each other on the few things it had in both, and you would never know if it is you not understanding the game (so trying it wrong), or you were SUPPOSED to do what the manual says (but the game changes quicker than the manual). or you are supposed to do what the game says (but have to wait for that to have a visible effect). Or it is a real bug. Even up to, say, 6.0, the manual was still significantly behind the game, by the nature of games being updated and released before the manual for it was updated (and the manual should always be checked against the game: the manual may have what was INTENDED, but if the game does something different, then either the game is still bugged and needs to change or the manual has to give up and just say what the game ACTUALLY does), but around 5.0 you could just about rely on the manual to be accurate. And in 6.0 and again in 7.0 there were a LOAD of tutorials added. But if you never read the manual, and if you never do the tutorials, how would you EVER know either was wrong or lacking? YOU SHOULD RTFM and PLAY TUTORIALS because it is only by doing so you can make them "actually work". Not that it is actually wrong, I remember a Star Citizen fanboi who was really really upset at how BAD X4 was in, IIRC, 3.0, because the docking was harder in X4. What they did was ignore the holograph or the trails (that more often went through station structure, but at least it told you the rough direction to go), then ignored the red or green line for horizontal, circled nosepoint with arrows for offscreen nosepoint, chevron and lines, and how they all moved because they were DESPERATE to insist that X4 was totally rubbish and useless so you must still go to play Star Citizen, and give them money to make the game release "any day now". They WEREN'T looking for answers, they wanted confirmation of their beliefs they already held.

@CptSnuggles07 I'm not Ketraar but I think I can answer too 😊 It's very simple, there is no hidden value for xenon aggressiveness, all different situations are the result of emergent situations in the galaxy, even players with the same seed will see the galaxy/xenon in a different state as X4s simulation is not deterministic. Some lost Kdestroyer, some I battleship built in another sector and the situation for Xenon changes. I've seen this "myth" going around on reddit and replied to people that this is false information, someone came with this and people simply took it for granted as it seemed to explain some situations they observe, so fell for bias. So yeah, it's a false information.

@@Shuulleecho Thing is it is often called "Xenon Agressiveness" because it is a significant factor for how aggressive the Xenon are. Remember, we aren't devs or modders with intimate inside knowledge of the game code, so we only see the results, and the results are "Xenon invade more".

@@markhackett2302 The issue is that people keep asking for a setting, then you can ask, what setting? To which people respond, make Xenon stronger, which then begs the question, in what way? More ships? More Economy? Stronger weapons and shields? So what magic button do you want devs to switch to achieve "make Xenon invade more"? During 7.00 there was a long thread about exactly this, several players with several saves, and factual results about how dynamic the X4 sandbox can be. The issue with generic "my experience is not what I expected" comments about this, without understanding the mechanics, is fine, but it wont lead to any meaningful change since we cant just ignore the systems that are in place. There is always room for improvement, but as mentioned in that 7.00 thread, any change to balance needs to be done with care as they can have severe (negative) impacts.
