At the peak of my burnout, I was put on 20mg temazepam and 3x10mg oxazepam. Transfered to diazepam 20mg. Now tapering for 9 months, and down to 4.8mg diazepam. 10% taper off every last dose, every two weeks. I'm beating this struggle. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Every two weeks seems to be the right amount of time for me too. I've been trying to come off Xanax and I've been going .025 every week or two but then I have days where I don't wanna be anxiety ridden and not get scared when the doorbell rings so I'll take more a couple times a week but I'm basically down to 2mg of Xanax. I I was prescribed Klonopin for 7 years and forced off by my methadone doctor who was afraid of losing his license cause he had previous drug charges. So he literally has blood on his hands just so he wouldn't get in any more trouble. Then they made it ok to be on them but you can't get take home bottles and you gotta be on 80mg. Now at my new clinic you can have take homes and be on benzos and they'll put you up to 110mg if you're on benzos. I've tried so many times to get back on just a small amount of Klonopin for emergencies and so I can get take home bottles. It's just hard to find a doctor willing to prescribe you a benzo and taper you, especially since it was my dumb ass that got back on them but I had no choice cause I was staying in my house not wanting to leave cause I'm afraid I'll have an anxiety attack.

The trick is to not taper too fast. Hyperbolic tapering is the answer. Your husband's at 7.5mg. His next taper should be 7.5 - 0.75 = 6.75mg. If that is too much? Than even lower. Mayby 7.5 - 0.5 = 7mg. Everybody has his own taper speed. Be patient. Quality of life is most important. Good luck. 🍀

Now that I'm down to 2mg of Xanax a day I wake up with crazy anxiety so I figure I'm just going to raise my methadone dose high enough to cover up the withdrawal cause it is a cns depressant. I don't know if it's the methadone wearing off too fast or if it's withdrawal from Xanax, but even if I take my pills in the morning I still don't feel right until my methadone kicks in. I also made the mistake of taking more Xanax for a few days cause my cat who was 20 years old died. I think that gives you rebound anxiety.

Hopefully, he just saved you a ton of money and heart ache and self blame. He may of even saved you neurological injury that you won’t even know about until months down the line. Going back on the benzo won’t even solve everything because you are now injured, and back on the benzo, masking that injury. The worst part is you’ll need to come off again once you notice you aren’t getting better. You’ll likely experience even more injury and discomfort the second time off but you’ll have to keep going. Either that or you’ll reinstate again and again until you realize there is no more staying on them and every time is worse. By then you are super, super injured and have a type of nerve and muscular pain where pain medications will only make worse. Nothing will work the same. You’ll kindle yourself so badly you’ll wish for… well… you’ll at least wish you didn’t go to detox and you took your time and then stuck with your decision.

It wasn’t until I started hanging around other people with chronic akathisia that I realized how long people can suffer. Most of my worst stuff erupted tardive, two, three, even 12mths off. I had no concept of things erupting months after stopping. Dr. Shipko has noticed tardive akathisia being rather COMMON with people stopping antidepressants after years of cumulative use. Find his work in Mad In American. SSRI’s Elephant in the Room: Tardive Akathisia. Or read his other posts “Shooting the Odds”. Yes I went to detox 13 times and all it did was make me worse. I have been on Xanax for 40 years. I started taking it in 1983 from a doctor for an anxiety disorder. It really helped me I never got tired I never lost my memory but now as we get older the body changes and I am 66 years old. My body became more sensitive to benzodiazepines. Now they put me on Ativan and my body is still sensitive to the medication but not all the time. My doctor is going to taper me just like you explained. I am so scared. All the medication I have been taking has been legally prescribed by a licensed psychiatrist and I put my prescription in a legal pharmacy. Thank you very much. God Bless You 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

I had a (quack) doctor who worked me up to three bars of Xanax (6 mgs.) daily. I could not live that way, but I did not know a person could die going cold turkey and that was what I did. I had hallucinations, night sweats, bodyaches, nausea, headaches and one morning I woke with a blown pupil and it never has gone back to normal. Every doctor is always fascinated by it. I jokingly say I am related to David Bowie. I think I was a cm from dying.

@Dead_Again1313

Switching to clonazapam is actually a good move since it's much longer acting and it doesn't hit tye system as hard. This is more ideal from tapering from a short acting benzo like xanax. The shorter acting, the more disastrous the withdrawal can be. Once you've been on the clonazapam for a while, try cutting your doses by 25% for a few months. If that works out, it would be good to see if your doctor will switch you to something lighter, such as diazepam (valium) which is weaker but even longer acting. If that works out, you could continue to cut the dose until something even lighter is called for. Librium, for example does just enough to prevent you from being in danger. It's the benzo they give people who are detoxing in jail. Best of luck to you. I'm 38 and have been on this Rollercoaster for a while but you still have more experience than me. Trying to cut down on the antidepressants might be beneficial as well, as benzos are sometimes prescribed to combat their side effects. Maybe you could work your way down to two of them by adjusting the dose of others or substituting two of them with one. It might take a while but the right combination is out there.
@Mysticmandyland

My suggestion is to swap to diazepam- it has the longest half life. Then do a slow taper. Keep your end goal of recovery in mind everyday. If your will to be free of benzos is strong enough- failure is not an option. Taper at around 1mg a month. And know that you will feel better for it. I was on benzos for about 25 years and now I’m actually calmer after 2 years I’m 51. You are not trapped there is lots of hope.

Yeah that's the hardest part. It's so much easier to come off Klonopin cause the longer half life. I figured if you have to use Xanax then you have to spread out the pills during the day so there's always some the in your system. Klonopin I feel is a lot easier to come off than Xanax. Detoxes are the biggest waste of time. You get off and you feel like the back of your head is hooked up to an electric socket.

You are right. Tapering must be measured in months, like half I year. Anything shorter leaves you with such a carving, that leads you back to the same addiction at a higher level. My doctor gave me .25 Librium twice a day until I see her in a few days but I am barely making it. This is after being in Xanax for approximately 20 years and the past 6 months at 8mg daily. Sorry for your loss man. The withdrawal from Xanax or Klonopin would definitely make me wanna kill myself but then you think about your family and friends but man that feeling is like torture and the only thing you can do is kill yourself or try to stock pile pills so you don't have to worry about running out and having to see a doctor. Imo they should legalize all drugs and put a warning on the box. Cause let's be honest, the war on drugs failed miserably so might as well make them all legal. People who've never done drugs aren't all of a sudden going to use cocaine or heroin cause they're not drug addicts and never have been. They might as well regulate everything and just tax us on the drugs. Better than the plan they have been doing for years and getting people addicted to these things. Even Zoloft you can't just stop taking without getting brain zaps and other weird side effects. That's why I hate when they say "oh it's not addicting" but then they stop taking it and the withdrawal is crazy. No safe non addictive drug should make you feel like that. Doctors lie and have no idea how you're going to react to a medication. Then they never go the risk to benefit route.

I will share with this… I was once told to go through my health insurance plan, which leads to the worst informed people who will end your life. I was in for detox and removed Cold Turkey. Complete nightmare. And by the way more times than not, you have to detox in a psychiatric unit, because benzodiazepines are considered psychiatric drugs, so once you’re in you are locked in, and you are locked in with many people who are in a unit that are not there to detox, when issues arise with severe symptoms, nobody cares, nobody wants to hear it , people believe you have drug seeking behavior. This needs to be addressed.

Many symptoms have reduced, except the relentless terror feeling & cognitive impairment are still severe. I would really appreciate a ‘Short’ KZitem clip I can share with family members acknowledging the severity & long lasting protracted symptoms of Benzo & SSRI rapid withdrawal. It is so difficult to get them to understand how horrific these symptoms can be to try and live with, and, that there is currently NO treatment for most of these symptoms. For me, the worst to try & cope with is the constant ‘terror feeling’ for no reason, & akathisia was very cruel too. All of the other symptoms I can survive, but the terror feeling is getting very hard. It’s been 3 years. I do get some days that it is less intense with the use of subutex 4mg, but even it doesn’t help some days… it is starting to be too much for me…….

Would suggest to quit cold Turkey, since it's been not that long u were taking it, light withdrawal I am expecting (but if u don't know hard withdrawal symptoms from experience, u might not be able to tell it's still mild symptoms)

Can i take xanax on SoS basis? I have insomnia and don't want to get addicted to any medication... however, sometimes when i don't get sleep for 3-4 days straight, i have to pop up a zolpidem 10 or alpazolam 0.5 ... and i get 6 hours sleep... so can i get addicted to drugs even if i take them with a gap of 2-3 days or so???
