Maui Xaphoon Shelter in Place Lesson Series
Aloha Everyone! Lesson 7 presents the Gateway to the High Register. This first overtone of the Xaphoon, as well as on all other tubular single-reed instruments, is called the “high register” rather than the “second octave” because it occurs at one-and-a-half octaves, rather than the octave (as on a flute). In this case it is a high G note. (Note: saxophones have a conical--not tubular--bore, so they overflow at the octave.) By “gateway,” I mean the easiest way to get started using the overtone notes. The phrase shown is just a slur between the high E note (left thumb only on the instrument, all others off, except the right baby finger used to support the instrument) and the overtone G above, which is accomplished by closing all the other holes EXCEPT THE LEFT INDEX, while tightening the lip slightly so the reed crackles into the “squeak” range. That squeak is your high G note! Once you get it, use your lip and a little vibrato to tune it accurately and present it sweetly. Each lesson has a jam-along track available at / xaphoon-lesson-series The jam-along track for Lesson 7 is a simple C groove. Please practice this “gateway” lick repeatedly, and try to incorporate it into some longer phrases that fit the music.
