I’ve had my D-109WB for a couple of weeks now and I’m generally very impressed by it. AM and FM are really, really good. On shortwave it’s amazing what such a small and inexpensive radio can do. It has good sound from the speaker and through earbuds it sounds pretty impressive. I like having the weather band. We definitely have weather in Wisconsin. Complaints: buttons are not intuitive and manual is next to useless. I still am not sure how to easily switch back to frequency tuning after doing a SW scan. I have no idea how to save and retrieve stations with the memory feature. Things I’d like: RDS for FM, backlit buttons for use at night. Bottom line? Very sensitive radio on MW, FM and SW. The Qodosen DX-286 is said to be more sensitive, but it’s about 2x the price of the D-109WB.

The only thing I wish radio manufacturers would do is have a "true scan" for short wave where it scans EVERY frequency instead of skipping to the primary bands (and missing all the super interesting in between frequencies). The odd-ball frequencies are where the action is.

I have a lot of portable AM and shortwave receivers and have to stop myself from buying more. I have plenty for my community if a disaster happens. When we were hit by two bad hurricanes in 2020 I saw how important a very sensitive AM radio can be. It was the only way I could get news during the day from other cities outside the damage area. Back then I used the Sony ICF-19. Its internal ferrite is only 4.75 inches but it`s very thick and electrically equals a six inch ferrite. It`s a great inexpensive power outage daytime AM receiver that can hear stations about 200 miles away to get information in your state during emergencies when nothing else works. I now have much more sensitive Sangean PR-D4W and CCrane EP PRO. I can easily hear Dallas WBAP 820 out of Dallas at noon here in Louisiana and it`s 300 miles away. But I have to take the radios away from my camper and power lines to get a clean signal. During a power outage or very remote location though they`re twice as sensitive. The Sony can probably pick it up too faintly. Haven`t tested it here. It does work VERY well with an inductive loop like the AN-200 so I need to check it. But the Sony runs at least 400 hours on a set of 3 D-cell alkaline batteries...a record breaking off grid receiver. I don`t like the DSP soft muting on AM at night though. The other two work perfectly for nighttime DXing.

@@FarpointFarms I`ve never seen one better than the CCrane EP PRO. It has a fine tuning knob for the ferrite antenna and external antenna ports. It blows my mind. The fine tuning knob can have a dramatic effect on those wavering signals and clean them up perfectly from garbled to perfectly understandable. I`m gonna build some giant loops to connect to it. I have a 4 ft loop I made from a solar panel box I need to try with it. I made one loop with a 16 inch pizza box with 17 turns of 24 AWG magnet wire and a 450pf tuning capacitor that works much better than the AN-200 but it has little effect on the extremely sensitive CCrane.

It's small, but probably the most capable of all the receivers. You may say that you don't need SSB, but SSB is useful for more than just listening to Ham radio operators, you can use SSB if an AM broadcast you're trying to listen to has interference by the AM center carrier, you miss out on many non Ham operator signals that use SSB like planes over the ocean, pirate broadcasts, number stations and ect.

For a portable it is ok. But check out the real top line tube radio the SP600 from Hammarlund. The R390 (32 tubes). High end SWL sets from National on surplus / boatanchor market. The real receiver specs include sensitivity, desense, spurious response, selectivity, stability, image rejection, audio distortion. Early transistor radios were poor in most regards. The inclusion of convenient features ( bells and whistles) is nice but the essential performance is paramount. I am sure you know this, but for the less techy of your readers: Image is when a superhet local oscillator mixes with a signal at 2x the i.f. frequency above ( usually) the desired one. On shortwave with a single if of 455 KHz, the front end selectivity is poor enough to allow this. So if a radio is tuned to, say, 15 MHz, it will hear a strong station at 15.910. Double conversion with an initial higher i.f. at perhaps 10.7 MHz or even above 30 MHz eliminates this. Desense is when a strong signal on a different freq. than what you are listening to gets past first tuned rf stage and affects the bias voltage of the rf stage and essentially lowers the gain. Your desired station seems to fade out but it really did not; your radio did. These issues are solved in better base station receivers. Modern ones also have nice features such as memories. Advanced ham /SWL sets are the best for fixed use. High end tube gen coverage receivers with double conversion will be reasonably immune as well to EMP. That D109 is a great back up and portable unit especially if AC power is gone. But it is not a bad idea to pick up something like a good set from the last good years of the tube era with double or triple conversion and a product detector ( for better SSB) tuning AM bcst up through 30 MHz. Ans a spare tube set. National, Hammarlund, Collins and Hallicrafters were the best. Selling for a few hundred $ they are a bargain. CB, ham, SWL and FM ( FRS / GMRS/ Ham) all all good tools in a survival kit, as well as just fun. Keep up nice work with your channel. It gets an "A" from me. Sometimes these less than expensive receivers add for few too many bells and whistles...Although not a bad receiver, there are a few things that would hold me back from purchasing one...First for me to have a serious general coverage receiver, I want SSB...Looking at the selling price for this, dig $20 or $30 USD deeper into your pockets and you can have one and a better receiver...But this does have NOAA weather, a plus for sure but it's reception isn't the best for the NOAA frequencies...Third reason has been mentioned and that is the inter-modulation with an external antenna...To me save the effort for blue tooth and the SD card and spend a bit more of that expense for some better filtering on the front end...Why try to chase a weak HF Transmitter only to hear a local MW station where it should not be...So for me, this receiver falls right into that tweener performance and price range...Buy that I mean that the price range is not what I'd want from a receiver...It's in that middle ground I tend to stay away from...I've got a good size collection of table top to portables...I've got some that are well over the thousand dollar mark and some as low as $10 and $13 dollars USD...It's that $50 to $100 USD that I get real picky on what I spend my money on...Just my opinion...

Good video. I like these reviews. I bought a sangean 909 that seemed like it was really nice but had barely any volume. Had to return it. Don't be afraid to play those topics on the radio. People need to hear it and prep now.

Toddebert reviewed this on his channel. I ordered one. From what I understand, it sounds pretty good. Bluetooth is a nice feature too, particularly if you’re listening to podcasts. I have a few Tecsuns, and I am interested to see how this radio compares to those. The interface seems very much like a Tecsun.

@@FarpointFarmsI got it yesterday. After using it 10 minutes, it would not receive MW or FM. Bluetooth worked fine. I am returning it. Too bad because when it did work, it sounded incredibly good. I have a Tecsun 990 that has Bluetooth. I’ve had great experiences with the Tecsun radios. The 990 is VERY nice on sideband. The vfo works beautifully. Anyway, I guess you win some and lose some.

@@FarpointFarms It is poorly rated on a number of websites, by people who bought and use (or used) the radio. Being "really impressed" for something it appears you just took out of the box ir rediculous. It should be used for a period of time before you give it the Farpoint Farms seal of approval. We don’t make much in new features anymore for the price point it is a great little radio. Plus he is not peddling your just upset because you only make comments based on others, do you have the radio and have you used it for a while? I have an original Sony and an elite radio from Eton and I like them both for there virtues. If you don’t like what he shows just go somewhere else. I am grateful that he does reviews an is bias about where they come from. Yes if we made them here in the good ole USA 🇺🇸 it would be awesome but we don’t make anything. Even made in the USA uses materials to make most American made products. USA sadly sold out to others due to economic riches of our own corporate hunger and profit hurting our own people. You want it to change complain to our own economy of greed. The general population has been left out and pressured to buy foreign products since we don’t have the leverage we had 40 years ago.

No I'm impressed because I review literally 100's of radios a year from companies and I always test them the same way. This one beat nearly every radio Cheap or expensive during those tests. It is literally a new radio that isn't even for sale here state side yet, so you are not pulling reviews for this radio sir. I put it up against my Eton 750 and it has better receive on AM. I've said this 100's of times over the years, but let me say it again. If the product sucks, you'll never know because you'll never see the review on my channel. About 1 in 8 products sent to me hit the trash can and never get a video made. About 1 in 10 products offered to me even get sent to me as I turn most down before they are sent. I hope this helps you understand my review process. I guess I forget sometimes that non-KZitemrs don't know how this all works. It's a great way to show off cool electronics and tools with you guys, and also a great way to help fund the channel as well as providing me with new toys to play with. To this day, no company has ever paid me a cent for a review, and only a few have ever asked me to put a video out for something I didn't think was worth it. None of them ever got a video, I assure you. I'm sorry you don't like a radio you don't own, and haven't tested. I own it and have tested it and I think it's well above average, and then when you take it's cost into account, I think it's an excellent radio! I actually have it in my bedroom to listen to AM stations at night. It's AM receive is better than nearly every other radio I own.
