There's also MEL-HKG via MNL option on Philippine Airlines (菲律賓航空). Alternatively, you can do PR Philippine Airlines (菲律賓航空) MEL-MNL then Cathay Pacific (國泰航空) MNL-HKG. That way you only deal with the tight cramped seats of Philippine airlines once your MEL-MNL Leg then the wider CX seat on MNL-HKG instead of all the way MEL-MNL-HKG on PR (菲律賓航空) which has you spend the whole trip on cramped PR seats. Knew the PR cramped seats from my mother because she did fly PR Philippine Airlines (菲律賓航空) MNL-JFK both ways and also KIX-MNL both ways. Regarding Philippine Airlines they have the same planes as CX but lose the AC plug on their widebodies in Fiesta Class PR economy class unlike CX which has all class AC plugs in widebodies.

Thank you for letting us know! I heard Philippines Airlines is not too bad and I was thinking of flying with them for this trip as their pricing is competitive. Good to know their seats are packed, maybe their tickets are cheaper because of this I am not sure… I don’t think CX has AC plugs on their planes for economy class seats tho… not sure again. Anyways I preferred flying with Brunei but not PR was because I was pretty concerned about the transit experience in Manila… Brunei’s airport small and boring, but I was ok. I heard MNL is not so good…so I prefer going for another rather cheap option this time.
