Xitang is an ancient village in the province of Zhejiang known as the Venice of the East or the Venice of China for its beautiful canals and wooden boats. This town stood out for its craftsmanship and its trade during the Qing Dynasty (1636-1912), a period in which China barely accepted anything in exchange for its products other than silver, much of which came in the form of Spanish and Mexican coins. Today Xitang lives essentially from tourism, although in its shops and stalls you can still see many of the old manufacturing techniques and its restaurants offer irresistible specialties made in the old way.
