Good review. I don’t watch a lot of Kdramas but was aware of different styles of speech. Not something Americans are aware of but it exists in many languages. I agree that there could have been a way to subtlety explain Korean culture so the viewers were aware - even a voice over works.

i really liked this show as a kdrama fan myself. I feel the show's main issue is the short runtime, and due to that i really felt they rushed some storylines. I really believe once this show gets to 4 seasons and kitty gets to her second semester of her senior year. I feel one of the things why some people arent liking this show is they really view this show as just an american teen drama and not a kdrama as most foreigners dont know anything about kdramas or korean culture unfortunitely.

I definitely agree that people aren't liking it as an "american" teen show, the parts I most enjoyed about it myself were all the kdrama references

@@MarieMaurerKdramaReview I laughed so hard when Q was telling Kitty, “life isn’t like a K-Drama” *proceeds to show Dae come into the cafeteria magically with Korean music playing like a kdrama*. Very self aware

So some clarifications in the third movie the family vacationed to Korea. They introduced the character dae in the third movie technically but a different actor and played him. The movies are based off a very popular book series. Concerning the whole Love square dance thing in Xo kitty. That’s pretty typical in a lot of American teen tv shows or at least the ones that I’ve watched. In general this show while it does a drama elements is mostly an American teen romance comedy series. The writer Jenny Han has expressed/explained in the past that at least with kitty’s sister Lara jean that while lara jean is Korean American that it’s not her sole identifier or something that maybe she feels that should be leaned on heavily. The reason why I’m saying this is because I’m assuming this goes for kitty too to a certain degree. I agree that there is also inside jokes or Easter eggs for people who are familiar with the movies/books and if you come into the series not watching or a fan of the film series or books then you might be lost or confused by some of the references or callbacks to films .

Thank you for clarifying! I can't believe the last 2 movies blended into 1 in my mind haha 🙈. Also, as someone who never read the books it's interesting to me that the author wasn't interested in exploring the families Korean side more (especially considering their moms dead). As for XO Kitty, I definitely assumed that was part of the whole "get to know mom" intention of going to KISS. But if Kitty/the producers aren't wanting to explore bi-racial heritage that would explain ALOT of the show for me 😊 -thanks for your comment

@@MarieMaurerKdramaReview Hello thanks for the kind reply. So I was mainly talking about it from kitty’s sister Lara jean’s over kitty herself . I’m only assuming to a certain degree that the same thing goes for kitty. Meaning that her going to South Korea and learning about her mom is through her pov and her experiences . Essentially this show is more of a coming of age romantic comedy series. Also about the language thing they did kind of explained but very briefly. So kitty was basically waitlisted for a while it wasn’t until she got a phone call from the head admissions office that she was given a spot and it was very last minute. In the second movie they did kind of gloss over the fact that despite her mom not being around anymore she does have family on her mom side and does visit them during the holidays. But I guess you would have read to the books to know that 🤷♀️ lol
