@@ryanb1374 I agree that teacher education is often perceived as a soft option. However, not all students admitted to teacher education have a burning desire to be a teacher. In some cases, a student isn't sure what they want to do, but they definitely want a degree... so they apply for a few courses, hoping to get in to at least one, despite their low year 12 marks. Teacher education is sometimes considered 'the degree of last resort'. It might be the third and least attractive course that they apply for, but with the lowest bar to entry, a student with poor marks might just get a place. In a year where the admission score is lowered, a group of students who normally would not have gone to university are allowed to start a teacher education course. It's not that more students want to be teacher, but that the ones applying to a teaching degree as their "last resort" option actually get a place.

That gaming laptop performs about as well as a $200 refurb desktop that I tossed together for a kid. Throttling and stutters are not good. It should be tuned from the factory. Add a 3.4ghz Phenom II X4 with 16GB of DDR3 RAM and a GTX 1050 TI, 240GB SSD into the mix. I'd be interested in seeing how it compares for games. Make sure you upgrade to BIOS v1.2.3 - massive difference for gaming. Undervolting is very easy with TS (do not use XTU as it causes sleep issues). I played a bit APEX and getting stable operation over longer period of time, no issues. I personally love how quiet the fans are when in low CPU tasks and when load is high the noise is actually not bad at all. Also I went for UHD over OLED for better control of screen color profiles.

i got the X1 extreme and returned it. 1. the screen choice for me (so IMHO) is crucial. they let you choose a dim 300 nits fhd or a 400 nits 4k with touch. they also claim they are both antiglare: the 4k is NOT anti glare (i mean, i expected that), but that's not thr prob. i think 400 nits is the minimum for working nicely in a well lit environment. i thought i could scale to fhd the 4k and retain the 400 nits. bad choice, because windows is absolute crap at rescaling, everything was blurry-er than my old not even fhd pc. why not keeping 4k? 4k on a 15" device is useless. yes you can notice but our eyes are fine at fhd, crisp but not out-of-reality crisp. 4k meant the fan ran more (more of this) and the gpu was being demanded more, for something not necessary. more heat = less durability. 2. tha fan ramping profile is terrible (keep in mind the 4k). the x1 stays quiet as long as it can then ramps up the fan for a quick cooling and the returns silent. if you play with it, fine: the fans will stay on after short delay. for everything elese they will go up-down-up-down. extremely annoying. 3. i didnt find the keyboard that orgasmic as everyone say. 1 key was badly designed too. i really liked the 2 ssd option, the esthetics, the slightly more I/O and the weird chio card slot which i use for some state-related things like healthcare etc... i confronted it directly to an xps: i liked the screen more (400nits fhd almost anti glare) the keyboard and weight, which at that time was like 100 and something gram less. for the rest it was the same: i'll get an xps. hope it helps!

Dave's right and this is what has always been the case with the entire XPS 15 lineup from the very start - it was never designed for gaming, it was put out there as a professional mobile workstation, and in particular targeted for Content Creators. It's amazed me with how many people have purchased these laptops over the years and moan that it thermal throttles / gets too hot when gaming after a short period of time... the chassis simply cannot handle it. Those who purely want to game should simply go down the route of Asus, Alienware, AORUS, MSI etc. The chassis on these maybe bigger & heavier, but they are for a reason.
@CriticalTechReviews
5 жыл бұрын
I think it's a valid complaint given that there are plenty of professional workloads that require extended use of the CPU and GPU. I am hesitant to recommend this to my graphic design friends because it'd fall throttle to hell during a complex 3D render. "Gaming" is not a slur and should not be used as one. If a computer can game, it can work. No game, no work, at least not for everything.

Unless you need a 15" oled screen & a dedicated GPU, I'd recommend getting the XPS-13 instead - it's lighter, has the same keyboard size and is just as nice. As an XPS-13 owner though, I'll list some of the main issues with XPS laptops (still my favorite laptop though): * The end of the charger and the middle of the laptop at the touchpad have leds that light up when it's being charged. These are really annoying at night. * The screen has a glassy finish which reflects a lot of light. Usually not an issue because the screen is really bright, but it's a problem if working outdoors. * The screen is quite prone to getting scratched. I guess just dust on my keyboard has done it. Visible when looking at it from the side, but doesn't bother me when using it. * You can't upgrade the ram on the 13" model (dunno about the 15"), so get as much as you'll need. * The laptop generates a lot of static which will be picked up by your audio equipment. I use an ifi volume reducer + an external DAC to eliminate it when listening to music, because I have sensitive (low impedance) headphones. If you do as well, then add 50$ to the price of the laptop because you NEED that thing.

I'm glad you mentioned the keyboard. I tried a Razer Blade 15 and the keyboard was unacceptable. It felt like a cheap bluetooth tablet cover chicklet keyboard and the layout was very odd. I literally could not type on it. The XPS keyboard is very good. The layout makes sense, key travel and overall feel is exceptional. I re-pasted it and get perfectly acceptable thermal performance however I am not much of a gamer so like Dave says, don't be disappointed if you don't have a killer gaming experience on an XPS.

Basically: If you have an Intel system, download Intel extreme tuning utility and on the core voltage offset and cache voltage offset you need to change them by the exact amount, my laptop goes -125mv but every laptop is different. Try with a -50mv since most laptops can do that and then use your computer for like a day or two, then go -60mv ect until you reach a blue screen of death. At that point, start your PC, the Intel tuning program resets to default so you'll have to set the voltage to the one before the crash. This usually doesn't destroy CPU's but if you destroyed yours (added voltage instead of lowering it for example) - its not on me

Also, like most people, I usually put my laptop to sleep (closing the lid) instead of shutting down .. so it's never an inconvenience even with Intel XTU. Also with you saying you disagree completely means I'm overclocking wrong too. Please enlighten me?

Thank you for this review Dave. I'm not a gamer, I'm the genealogy equivalent of a hard core gamer, though. My current ASUS Zenbook is dying - I believe I've damaged the plug in by tripping over the cord a few too many times (who thought it was a good thing to put the power plug on the right side.) I have been searching for a new slim laptop, but powerful enough to quickly run several software programs and a host of internet tabs open at the same time and searching at the same time. I also want it light enough to haul around, the keyboard has to be smooth. I'm a touch typist snob and keyboard responsiveness is important, the screen had to be bright but I don't want to pay for a touch screen. I appreciated your review as the Dell XSP was recommended as an alternative to the ASUS Zenbook. I'm still a little unsure of how to understand the what "generations" and i5,7,9 mean. And what I need spec-wise for my above stated computer use and what's just over the top extra for my computer needs.

Not sure if you'll be able to do a review as such, but I was hoping to find a review of a laptop for software developers. I've been watching all of your videos over and over again, but I don't think I really get the info that I need, I don't game much, just once in a while but not heavy games either, for me, the most important things are having a big screen prefferably 4k (but the big question is if I'll be able to use it without windows scaling), light weight, good processor and lots of RAM, at least 16 but would preffer 32... and of course, nvme, maybe 2 slots? The main thing is, I don't really need a graphics card, that makes the laptop more expensive and thicker... Does my question even make sense? haha, thanks, love your channel and keep up the good work!

At under $1600 a couple days ago I love my XPS 15 OLED. Just calibrated my screen today and it has 100% SRGB/DCI-P3 coverage and 99.8% Adobe RGB. The Gamut volume percentage are much more higher but not as important as the coverage. Ive had the Dell xps 9560 since its release and ive played a good amount of video games on it regularly (games like runescape, TFT, Hollow knight almost every day to this day) and I havent had any issues with it whatso ever but I do have to agree that after an hour or so, even on these less demanding games the laptop gets very hot and throttles. I would never even think about playing something like pubg, overwatch or apex, im sure the 9560 can do it just fine but that heat from the laptop just makes me feel like im doing damage to the laptop which really isnt worth it. Aside from that issue its exceeded my expectations as an accounting major, the 4k touch screen is beyond beautiful and ive had absolutely no issues with the screen or its performance even after all this time. (Ive read online that some people have experienced screen burn but my screen is still as beautiful as when i first turned it on.) Ive noticed a slight decline in the battery life but thats to be expected, i have it plugged into a power source 90% of the time anyways. The only issues that I have so far is 1. The finger scanner works 50% of the time Tbf my fingers are really oily so that may be effecting its performance. Im sure the newer model is much better. 2. Sometimes after 3 failed attempts of using the finger scanner it tells me to use my pin to unlock the laptop instead, but the laptop fails to bring up the screen that allows me to enter the pin. So im just sitting on a screen that says “please enter your pin” while the laptop wont even let me enter it which forces me to restart the laptop. On restart it works just fine, this problem has only happened 3 times. Each incident far apart from the last. Tbh i see it as such a small problem, i truly feel like this laptop will last me a lifetime. If your a college student and play less demanding video games regularly i would still very much recommend this laptop its fantastic. Especially now since the camera is on top, the nose cam in an era where 60-70% of job interviews are conducted in an online chat is just really unprofessional. Im no expert on laptops nor on any piece of technology in general, im just trying to help out another potential college student with the same needs that I had. I hope this helps someone make a decision on a laptop!

Dave I have had this laptop for about a month now the 2019 version and I gotta say most of the points you said are pretty true. Just running Minecraft at 60 FPS heats up the laptop pretty quick to the point where you almost wouldn’t want to hold your hand on the bottom of the laptop. The top also heats up and you can feel it right above the F1-12 keys. I’ve also had some Bluetooth problems, where if I turn off the computer or just turn Bluetooth off it won’t turn back on unless the drivers are reinstalled. I’m not sure if that’s the killer cards fault or mine is defective. But other than that I’ve had no problems with this laptop and it’s really nice I would definitely recommend it

I bought the 7590 with touch 4k display, 16 gig RAM and 500gig SSD. The Killer Wifi card is HORRIBLE --every 20-30 minutes it drops. There is some decent coil whine (it doesn't REALLY bother me too much though), the battery lasts about 5 hours with the 4k model. I'd get the i7 and not the I9. The track pad/touch pad is really 'squirrely.' I have to shutoff any gesture functions in the touchpad to make it usable. Dell techs have 'worked' with me on the wifi issues for about a week. I'm really itching to send the laptop back because I don't see a use in ME buying a new Intel wifi card for a new computer.
