Brezhnev always had some trouble speaking because of a wound to the jaw he suffered during WW2. The doctors thought for a long time he would never speak again. His poor health in his later years really aggravated his speech problems. Plus, Brezhnev had a notable Ukrainian accent which made him difficult to understand to some non-native Russian speakers.

Brezhnev died in November 1982 at the age of 75. To today's 75 is not that old but I guess to Russia's standards it is old. But what killed Brezhnev was not old age, it was poor health and drug addiction. Brezhnev was especially addicted to pain killers which caused him to have several strokes beginning in the mid 1970s.

Can someone please tell me: 1) Who are the people in the audience? Is it the general public, or are they state officials? 2) Who are the people sitting behind Brezhnev? And if the audience are party officials, why do these people get to sit behind Brezhnev?
@NietzschanGuy
7 жыл бұрын
!) They're state officials as this is a congress meeting of the CPSU, it's roughly equivalent to a parliament meeting in the UK or the Congress / Senate in the US, though I believe held less often than both. 2) I'm not sure on all of them, but certainly the Council of Ministers (basically the cabinet) are present, as are significant military leaders and other senior party members. In some instances foreign visitors would be seated there too, for instance Castro was a frequent visitor, or socialist leaders from Africa and Asia. Also of possible interest, it's worth noting Alexei Kosygin was effectively second-in-command to Brezhnev at the time, but he's not the one sat directly behind Brezhnev at the position of chair of the meeting, but instead is sat to the immediate right (from our perspective watching the recording) of the man who is: Mikhail Suslov. At this time there was, as ever, a lot of behind the scenes political jostling, and Suslov was in many ways often the real power behind the throne, or at least so it's said in most histories I've read of the period. Suslov was a particularly fierce Marxist, even by Communist Party standards, and allegedly often read through even Brezhnev's speeches beforehand, to make changes and ensure they followed party doctrine. An interesting man, and I find it interesting he's often much closer physically to Brezhnev in public than Kosygin, a possible indication of his real power.

Hannodh, The audience members are deputies from the various regions, Republics, oblasts of the Soviet Union. The people sitting behind Brezhnev on the dais would be Members of the Politburo or others held in a greater position.

Krushchev fought in the Russian Civil War and held an important political post during World War II. Brezhnev was not a combat soldier during WWII; he was a political officer. His rank of Marshal was clearly undeserved. While he was a leader, Brezhnev awarded himself with all the military and civilian ranks and titles, as well as all of the civilian and military medals and awards. He clearly did not deserve most of them. He also wrote and published a bunch of books, which were ghostwritten.
