Chain punch drill
These chain punches are used after the first contact with your opponent. You should never commit this much power to your punches unless there is contact and little risk of missing.
What to do
"Throw" your arms continuously forward and tense up very briefly upon impact. Drive the power all the way from your feet and use forward momentum. You want the power of the punches to penetrate the mitt and reach the "opponent" (in this case, your partner holding the mitt). Keep the number of punches low. Focus on short, powerful bursts of punches.
Watch out for:
Don't punch so hard that it slows you down and you end up pushing. On the other hand, don't pull the arms too much back in order to increase the speed as this diminishes the power output.
Don't tense up through the whole movement. Tensing up too much slows you down.
Make sure you only tense up upon impact and only for split second. But the more you can tense up, the more power you can transfer into the mitt.
Try to find the best balance between speed, power, and tension.
Don't defeat the drill
Just pushing is easier, and perhaps it looks more impressive to the untrained eye, but there's no damage afflicted to the opponent. Don't do it. Practice explosive power.
How to hold the mitt
Hold the mitt close to your body, don't hold it in front of you. If your partner is too powerful you can use a bigger mitt.
Testing your power
If your partner holds the mitt higher, and close to his body (watch out for the face), you should be able to knock him off balance or at least more easily make him step backward.
