The most impressive Aikido practitioner I've seen, no disrespect intended to the founder Morihei Ueshiba, this man's instructor and founder of Aikido.

Shioda Gozo sensei. You're so hilarious. xD He has a playful innocent spirit similar to the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba. You know the level of mastery in Aikido by how easy (s)he makes it look. What really impresses me is how Shioda sensei uses his entire body to deflect the opponent. I wonder how many times he practiced those moves to make them look so easy. Thank you for the upload. ^^
wonderful to see. My line of Aikido flows through Gozo Shioda to the founder. Shioda, Makiyama, Bandy then myself. Been in Aikido for 15 years now and something I will cont. for all my life.

The man who inspired the character Goki Shibukawa... amazing.
Shioda Sensei. Uma lição de dedicação, humildade e bom humor. Sua agilidade é incrível.

First of all: Shioda Sensei was awesome. When I first began Aikido, I was taking falls with my bad grasp on Unkemi (The methods of taking falls) and good god was I, either, injured or very close to being injured. The big moves make it look fake but those are so that the fallers do not break on contact and can actually have a life after the demonstration while still showing the full swing of the technique. PS: I feel like I missed out so much having not known about the man when he was alive.

nice footage - and the pat metheny music was an unexpected delight! Shioda Sensei is so great. i don't do Yoshinkan, but only because of the format of the classes. i love how each of O Sensei's students captures an aspect of him, especially so with Gozo. thank you for posting!

Don't mind him, it's obviously he hasn't trained Aikido before. Aikido takes a long time to master, but once achieved, it's one of the best arts out there..

Aikido is a misunderstood martial art. The very premise of aikido' s technique is essentially about redirecting the opponents force.

Takeno sensei was Shioda sensei favourit uke, but to his own accounts Kancho didn't hold back with his techniques, so many times he came home battered and bruised, he always asked himself where is it going to hurt this time with a demonstration. But I think that is what most experts of on art have, from good musicians to great quaterbacks, they make it look so simple. But this level of Aikido takes years of training.

Gozo Shioda is one of my favorite Aikido students of O-Sensei :]
I've done enough throws over the years to look at his body mechanics to know that he isn't faking. You can see him using kinetic energy from the supporting side of his body to make running into him seem like running into a tree trunk. People that say its' fake make the mistake of thinking it's some kind of mystical magic or religion, and it's not, it's pure physics, nothing else. You just have to work at it over a really long time.
As always, Shioda Sensei can capture the attention of any crowd. His aiki was always so pragmatic and absolutely amazing to watch. I can only imagine being an uke for him during randori -- couldn't have been a very pleasant experience. I wonder how the Yoshinkan is doing these days.
That looks easy to do that, but I know that's not easy. Need a lot of practise and understand the key and point in the human body. This is so interesting to me.

So it doesnt matter with martial art is better, it is the attitude of a martial artist that reflects the true strength and value of an art!
Am very proud to watch this, everyone tells me how violent my Aiki is because I have a background in Kali, MMA, BJJ I always say it is Mean Aikido I'd like to think Shioda sensei would enjoy my real form of Aiki.

gozo's aikido was more along the lines of sensei seagals or sokaku takeda(daito ryu aiki jujutsu) no nonsense brutal and effective
I think, the most interesting part in aikido is its philosophy. It is very easy to hurt someone in a fight, and there are lots of methods and techniques to do so. But in aikido you try to defend without harming your opponent and that is even harder to achieve, than just hurting each other. If you do martial arts just to bet someone up, than you missed the point.
If you're practicing Aikido correctly, the guy attacking you will have learned his lesson without being hurt. That's its beauty, the reason O-Sensei broke off from martial arts in the first place to develop this style. It is true that today Aikido is popularly viewed as a martial art... but in essence it's a philosophy on life. If you're interested this little anecdote featuring one of the original Westeners to practice Aikido explains what i mean perfectly.

The point of Aikido is about reading your opponent. If your opponent comes at you with an over head attach you respond according to the ki they generate. If you do something else you "harmonize" with that projection of ki accordingly. In essence, you open your mind as much as you can to your opponent. It is amazing what defensive abilities you have when you do not resist and rather join with an attacker.

Every time I look Siodas shows and videos of his students I feel like they are from different schools! How could his perfect technic origin from that quite heavy and not real actions of classic aikido. He is amazing IMHO
The Yoshinkan teaches a 1 year course that is mandatory for the Tokyo Riot Police. One of your compatriots, Robert Twigger did it and wrote a book about that course "Angry White Pyjamas" - If you read it you might understand why Yoshinkan has a reputation of a hard aikido style. In my day I have done my fair share of wrestling, kickboxing etc. as well as bogus martial arts. Yoshinkan Aikido - when taught by somebody that knows their stuff is the real deal. Check it out - it might surprise you.

The real point of aikido is to try to restore balance to an unbalanced situation. A true Aikidoka lends his or her emotional and spiritual calm to any opponent willingly. The true opponent is yourself, your own ego and pride. If you can over come those then you will be truly victorious. In essence, any one can be your enemy or your friend at any time. If you can find your center and grasp your opponents center through a technique then you can resolve conflict peacefully. That is Aikido.

Japan People is Valiant People. Japan Turk are Same. Many years ago I watched "The Last Samurai" film. Japan's Samurai like Ottoman's Akıncılar. I Hope They Will Be Muslim. InshaAllah.
I saw a many guestions about why the "uke (the opponent)" can't remove his hand, so I would like to share my understanding of Akido from ten years of training. Imagine you are closing your eyes, and holding an empty bag. Then, suddenly some guy put a really heavy thing into the bag while you don't know. Do you think you can let that bag go very guickly? I think you would lose your balance because you don't know how heavy the bag is until you see it.
