Here are some 40-year-old memories I have of Kelly Smith, whom I have never met. I graduated from BYU in 1980 and went to graduate school at the University of Nebraska. After getting a master's degree, I came back to BYU to get an MBA, graduating in 1984. I saw Kelly play but graduated and moved to Florida before the national championship season. In 1985, BYU played Ohio State in the Citrus Bowl. A day or two before the game, a fireside was held in a chapel in Orlando, and Kelly was one of the players who spoke. He said that after the 1980 season, Coach Scovil told him if he came back the next year, he would make him a starter. Kelly chose to serve a mission and was called to the Florida Tampa Mission. Shortly after Scovil's conversation with Smith, Scovil left to be the head coach at San Diego State. Kelly mentioned that who knows what would have happened if he hadn't served a mission. And I think there were people at the fireside that Kelly and his companion taught and baptized. If he had stayed at the Y, his eligibility may have been used up before the 1984 season, and he wouldn't have caught the pass to beat Michigan in the Holiday Bowl. His remarks at that fireside have stayed with me for a long time. At least that is how I remember it.

"The only reason Blaine wasn't the starter was two inches....."......Yep, sure, whatever bruh, and lest we forget that little thing called NFL caliber talent. There was no struggle in the coaches' room that year when deciding on who the starter was gonna be..
