My grandfather passed away in 1974. During his wakes, the “Tao masters” chanted the Buddhist’s sutras in Hokkien. I was fascinated. Wow, it’s sound different from the Hokkien that I understand. I only speak extremely basic Hokkien. Most of my conversations is in English. Till today, when I hear the older generation from Taiwan who speak “ Hokkien “, they sound like the way my uncles, aunts and relatives style. School is not xuexiao but xuetang. Teacher is Xiangsheng, but not laoshi. Theses are the two words I remember.
