British restaurants don’t impose every guest to order a drink and it’s perfectly fine not to order any alcoholic drinks. However, it is a norm to order a few drinks for the group but it is also normal to request for a jug of tap water for the table (everyone) too. Sharing food amongst yourselves is ok too but ordering one mains only for the whole group is not, unless it is a sharing platter, but not everyone needs to order a main dish. If someone hasn’t got the appetite then it is fine for someone to order a starter or two instead of a main dish. Desserts and after dinner hot drinks are optional too. However, courtesy and manners are important. The waiters do tend to give you time to look at menu and will come back to take order (normally drinks first) but if you’re really in a rush it will be ok to order drinks and food at the same time. It is ok to catch their attention but do so discreetly if possible. A lot of the time we think Chinese people talk louder in a restaurant is because it is a language we can detect automatically but to be fair, probably everyone else is just as noisy but we’re just over sensitive. It is perfectly ok to talk amongst yourselves inside the restaurant and it’ll be odd not to, but of course the acceptable noise level depends on what type of restaurant it is. Use common sense. Usual manners and politeness will go a long way. Such as using more please and thank you when ordering 😄
