Why is it 米飯, why not just 飯? Isn’t that kind of saying “rice rice”? Still trying to learn Chinese.

“米饭” generally refers to the state in which it has been cooked from rice 🍚, that is, cooked. Separately, “米”rice generally refers to the immature state.

@@SpicyKimchi- what she said is totally wrong, The terms “饭” and “米饭” should be interpreted according to local customs. In Shaanxi or Northwestern China, only when the term “米饭” is used does it refer to a meal made of rice. The term “饭” should be translated as a main course or a meal that includes rice, noodles, vegetables, meat, etc. For example, when asked “你吃饭了吗?”, it is asking if you want to have a meal, not specifically rice. Another example, “你吃米饭还是吃面?” is literal, asking whether you prefer rice or noodles. Note: Here you cannot omit to say “吃饭还是吃面”, this would be considered a grammatical error in the Northwest, basically no one would say it this way. Because in the Northwest, “饭” generally does not specifically refer to rice, it could also be noodles. For example, in Xinjiang, “汤饭” refers to soup with flat noodle pieces, a kind of noodle dish with pieces of flat noodles in meat soup, also called 饭.

@@bayley6415 In short, in the Northwest, rice is not a major staple food. People in the Northwest mainly eat wheat-based foods for three meals a day. Breakfast usually consists of buns, steamed buns, and pancakes. Lunch is usually noodles. Dinner is some vegetables with porridge, paired with pancakes/noodles. Their diet is more similar to that of Caucasians. The main source of carbohydrates is wheat.
