A lot of people have asked me over the years how I got involved in filming trains. So here is the story. It was a slow news day at the CBS affiliate worked for in North Carolina back in the fall of 1990. My assignment editor was trying to find something for me to cover. I told him to read the feature section of the Winston Salem Journal. There was an article on the Yadkin Valley Railroad and some of the men that worked there. So he let me spend the day filming the train crew and the trip up to Roaring River. It was so well received as a news feature piece that they let me go out another day to expand the story to what you see here. It one me the honors of Photographer of the year for the Gannett corporation that owned the station along with The Radio and Television New Directors Associations of the Carolinas Award of Excellence for best use of Photography.
