Greetings and felicitations grey area of amateur radio operators. Though, I am an not an amateur radio operator, I am often paid to expand frequency reception in many different transceivers. Keep the airwaves ready for the inevitable by expanding your transceivers to function on all the frequencies it can. Hopefully, it never comes to the point that a hideous catastrophe takes place. But you are prepared. Until then, enjoy, from one transceiver, amateur radio, the Citizen bands of many nations, 49Mhz, GMRS, FRS, PMR446, LPR433, Australian UHF CB, PMR, PEG radio, and also be able to listen to other services one should not transmit on without authority.

So, on the 991A, is this the best way to extend the UHF/VHF, or is there a more permanent solution? I already have the MARS mod for HF.

that's the only problem. you can only do this one channel at a time. and then back to normal. they do not stay where you can transmit all the time.

I was on camping/ off-road weekender and we all different radios, but all capable of frs/gmrs frequencies. I asked a gentleman with a $500 icom HT if he knew if the ham band antenna that came with it was good on gmrs frequencies….. his response was a “I don’t know” my point is its great for have that option in a real emergency but we need a resonant antenna to go with that mod……I use $30 gmrs compliant 5 watt radios that I could care less about if they take a drink. That being said , when my 991a arrives i am not going to not do that mod😮

It is like a firearm. It is better to have it and never need to use it, than to need it and not have it. When warranty ends, it may be advisable to do the modification. If three is never a need to use it, that is excellent. But, if you do need to use it, it is there, ready for your emergency traffic.

Thanks! This worked for a GMRS Repeater .... Saved me one Mars Mod. Is there any way of saving this ... or do you have to go into service mode whenever you want to transmit? Thanks again.

10 watts is perfect for repeaters, PMR446, LPR433, Citizen's Band, maybe 4 metres if it is within the range of the radio. I will extend this information to the future owner of the FT-991a, I am repairing. I will direct the new owner to this video.

If I do that, will the radio send CTS tone for GMRS repeater to open also? Not sure how to program CTS tones into it or if they would send in service mode anyway. Thoughts?

Abusing the privilege's of amateur radio will only bring stricter rules and aggressive enforcement. That being said, here's a question on the HAM General exam: G2B11 [97.405] What frequency should be used to send a distress call? Whichever frequency has the best chance of communicating the distress message. I'm sure zombie apocalypses would fall under this.

Modification of a type accepted Amateur radio for out of band transmit/operation is illegal for licensed Amateurs or anyone for that fact so why are you offering this video for people to do this? Is illegal operation something you advocate?
