Glad it's not just me, I have had at least 3 FT-70s, 3 or 4 FT-817s & 3 FT-450s. I dare not count up the amount of money I have lost selling and then buying again a few months later..

I bought the FT70 again due to your videos (I traded my first one in towards a g90) they are great little simple radios that are very “field radio friendly “ I keep feeling a need for DMR,but I think I’m staying with my FT70 whatever 😝

Yeah one of my favorite daily use radios. I’m like you and own and try all these HTs but the ft70 is just a great radio. I also have two batteries and have one always on charger. Great minds think alike heh.

Yaesu has calibrated the display to indicate a battery recharge/change at 7.0V or 20% capacity. Discharging below 20% reduces the service life/charge cycles of Li-Ion batteries, significantly. Also, storage charging of no more than 80% capacity is required to maximize the number of cycles a battery can provide. K4QEP

I bought my FT-70 once in May and I've regretted it ever since... Battery Life is horrible. Trying to adjust the volume while the radio is sitting in the seat beside me in the vehicle is next to important without losing control of the vehicle. The battery discharges even when the unit is powered "off" because the radio is truly never "off". I'll admit that transmit and receive quality is excellent. Battery life is too short so I don't get to use it enough because it is powered off charging... (and I'm not impressed with the idea of paying hundreds of dollars to get another battery and charger..)

The FT5d is a far superior radio easy worth the money , with all high function radios you need a spare battery ,you can do volume one handed but it's fiddly .

Follow-up post. There are a few hams in our local club that have the FT70D, and on the analog channels, their audio level is really low even with the mic gain setting as high as it will go. I was experiencing the same low audio. I ended up having such a hatred towards the device that I traded it for a Chinese radio with a local club member. I can guarantee that I won't be buying another FT70D. I was soured with Yaesu to the point of not wanting to buy any of their gear again. I did eventually give them another try and picked up the FT5D at a really good sale price.. The FT5D radio is a much better radio so far, and I can adjust the volume with 1 hand.

The biggest problem with this set is its poor sensitivity outside of 2m and 70cm so it's not suitable for scanning.
