What makes this game series so amazing is the full character and game world investment. If you start from Yakuza 0, you aren't just playing these characters. You're living almost three decades of their lives. It doesn't matter that you're in Kamurocho at some point in every one, because you 'live' in it, and the city ages with the characters. Going back to Sotenbori in Yakuza 5 was like revisiting your hometown you moved away from a long time ago. You know where everything is sort of, but it's an entirely different world now. It's the same but different. You see what age does to characters like Majima. You see Daigo go from a punk kid, to mature man with real power trying to follow in Kiryu's footsteps. You get to watch Haruka grow up the way a parent gets to see their own kid grow up. So when you get to this part, you think back to Kiryu and Haruka's entire relationship over the series, and it hits so much harder. I don't think any game series creates such an emotional attachment to it's characters and it's game world. Every gamer needs to experience the series at least once.

Well, for those who lament Haruka's decision, it's always implied since the death of Mirei Park that all the idol stuff Haruka did was to realize "Park-san's dream". Almost every conversation pertaining to the princess league all the way to the Japan Dome concert had always been to realize "Park-san's dream". Haruka does have a passing interest of becoming an idol, but is not enough to sacrifice her relationship with Kiryu. In fact, I'll go farther and say that Mirei Park is one of the antagonist in the game. She poached Haruka from Kiryu just to make Haruka do the dream she failed to do. She forced Kiryu to leave the orphanage to ensure Haruka's past was unknown. She gave Haruka the fountain pen/safe key, knowing that the letter inside the safe would be the target of Kanai and Katsuya. She is one of the most terrible person in Yakuza 5. The only redeeming factor she had was her tenacity shown when she borrowed money from Akiyama, but she's willing to manipulate people like Kiryu and Ogita, and of course Haruka, just to realize her dream. Haruka, way too good, sometimes to a fault, decided to realize Mirei Park's dream anyway.

I mean I half agree but mirei is villainized too much in this series lmao. I think you are being too harsh and subtracting that mirei DID actually care about haruka even if it was mixed in with her own vicarious ambitions. Mirei aborted her only child and never seemed to recover from it, seeing haruka awakened the mothering instinct in her and she enjoyed spending time with her minus the idol shit and wanted her to succeed and live a good life mirei did not. Mirei is not the most evil person in the series or in this game lmfao. To mirei, she was taking Haruka out of an uncertain life (ex-yakuza run orphanage where threats always occur) and making a stable successful life for her. Mirei lost her prospects because she loved a yakuza and I think from that place she didn't want to see another diamond in the rough get caught up in it too.

Since Like A Dragon was my first Yakuza game and I've blown through 0-5 and about to start 6, I'm a little sad that Kiryus journey is almost over. I'd put 5 up there in the conversation for my personal favorite Yakuza(Kiwami 2 also being in that topic) when it comes to storytelling. Kiryu willingly left Morning Glory so Haruka could fulfill her dream of being an idol, but in the end she gave it up because if being an idol meant she had to cut off ties with the guy who raised her, risked his life multiple times for her, and is the only father figure shes had, she wouldn't really be happy. When it comes to storytelling and character investment, I hate myself for just getting into Yakuza this year

That's how Japanese media is unfortunately. Idols and celebrities are expected to be in tip top condition, they have to meet the population's expectations and essentially are seen as clean/pure in a sense. If a idol suddenly came out with a revelation that would otherwise tarnish her image, let alone that she's a daughter to a crime syndicate like the yakuza, then that's pretty much it for them. No matter how popular they are it's an automatic denouncement. Career is done for. The company/execs/management cut the contract and throw them out. And pretty much the general public turns their backs to the person involved in the scandal, even if it turned out to be a lie. And sadly it doesn't just go away no matter where you go, that one smudge on your record follows you wherever you go, for a long long time.

@@zomboids2100 One of the best example pertaining to both celebrities in Japan and the Yakuza series would be Judgment/Judge Eyes. Pierre Taki is suspected for cocaine use and was arrested. And suddenly his likeness was entirely removed from the later JP release as well as the localized versions. In Japan, once an idol/celebrity is known to be associated to criminals or a criminal act, it might as well be over for them.

Literally just played and finished Y5 Thing is, I played Y5 like almost 2 years later than I played Y6 And I have to say, what happen in Y5 make Y6 becomes not really necessary I mean, if they still wanted to make Y6, that's their chance to introduce a new main protagonist with new characters around him In other words, Y5 should have been the end of Kiryu-Haruka's saga. I mean, why not? Kiryu and Haruka reunite, Tojo and Omi are at peace eventually, what is left for Kiryu to do? However they went with the unnecessary Y6, with Kiryu still being the face (not that I dont like it), with some made-up yakuza conflicts, and to top them all: Haruka has a baby...geez, not to mention the heartbreaking ending where Kiryu has to live separately from his loved ones... I mean, after all hell he went throughout the series, that's not how to treat our beloved Kiryu properly And now, after knowing Kiryu's poor fate at the end of Y6, perhaps it will take me quite a while before thinking about whether I want to play Y7 or not

Haruka deserves, at the very least, a little sympathy. Her actions are understandable, especially when you consider that she is only 16 years old in this game and the fact that Kiryu and Haruka have clinged to each other for basically all the time they've known each other. In my opinion, Haruka returning to Kiryu is the best possible thing that could've happened to them.

@@holly9096 But the thing is. Every since Yakuza 2. Kiryu was trying to make sure Haruka lives a happy life without the pain and suffering when being associated with a Yakuza. Kiryu is a Yakuza. Plus in every Yakuza game Haruka is always getting into shit by being associated with a Yakuza legend Kiryu wanted her to live a life free from Yakuza involvement but she kind of shot everyone in the foot after 5
@holly9096

@@WELSHGAMER99 Haruka's happiness has always been Kiryu. It's great that you mention Yakuza 2, because in that game Haruka straight up chooses Kiryu over a comfy life as an idol trainee and Kiryu himself is relieved by it. Kiryu has always seemed to struggle with the fact that Haruka loves him just as much as he loves her. It's due to this fact that he chooses (under Park's manipulation) to leave Okinawa and send Haruka off to become an idol even if she explicitly tells him that it's not what she or the orphans want. Haruka never wanted "a life without pain and suffering," she wanted a life with Kiryu and everything that that implied. Being kidnapped, threatened, or shot at included - if it meant being with him. She was never afraid of these things because Kiryu would be there to save her. And it's not like she expressed these desires selfishly. She absolutely knew that Kiryu wanted to be with her and the orphans, as well. In fact, she called him out when he was about to leave, telling him to his face that she knew he didn't want to separate himself from them. Kiryu made sacrifices in Y5 for her happiness, but Haruka could never be happy without him. Continuing as an idol would have negated everything he did for her sake.
@WELSHGAMER99
3 жыл бұрын
@@holly9096 But you need to understand from Kiryu's POV. Kiryu wants Haruka to lead a normal life distance from Kiryu's past. I mean it's why Kiryu established an Orphanage with a bunch of other kids but we know from that point the kids went through horrible shit due to Kiryu's past as a Yakuza coming back to bite him. In Yakuza 3 we saw the Orphanage being bulldozed down by Mine's men. Another thing to note that in Yakuza 2 she seen Ryuji Goda sliced a dude right in front of her. She's seen shit no child should ever witness. Haruka only wants to stick with Kiryu because he's the only family she knows. Park is right in the fact that with Kiryu around they are in danger regardless if he can protect his kids. Kiryu even mentions in the game that no matter how hard he pretends he's always a Yakuza.
@holly9096
3 жыл бұрын
@@WELSHGAMER99 If you wanna get knee-deep into Yakuza lore, Kiryu was brought in as Morning Glory's director because he and Haruka were short on cash while living in Tokyo. The orphanage had connections to Kazama Shintaro himself, and the position was offered to Kiryu by Kashiwagi. If anything, taking up the job at the orphanage brought himself and Haruka closer to his past instead. I'm going to stick by my argument and insist that neither Haruka nor Kiryu could have been genuinely happy while separated. The story pushes this fact countless times throughout every previous entry in the series. Yes, you're right in saying that Haruka has been undeservedly hurt countless times, but that reason alone is exactly why she needs him. Haruka "sticks with Kiryu" not only because he is family, but also because he is the only one who she can connect with on a genuinely equal level as a person regarding her life experiences. It's the same for Kiryu towards Haruka. You separate them, and they become _truly and unbearably_ alone. We see it directly in Y5. Kiryu leaving resulted in the both of them being more miserable than they were before they met each other. A life like that isn't worth living. On the other hand, when Haruka is with Kiryu, we see her thrive despite his Yakuza past catching up with him. She grows into a strong person, inheriting Kiryu's best traits (his protective nature, courage, and ideals). Kiryu's POV, or more accurately his misunderstanding, that Haruka would be better off living a "normal life" without him is what kickstarts their pain in Y5. The end of Y5 - them returning to each other - promises that while their life may be rough going forward, what's important is that they have each other. I wouldn't go as far as to say that Kiryu's sacrifices in Y5 were unnecessary, though. Haruka and Kiryu needed that short time apart to realize just how much they needed each other.

I have mixed feelings about Yakuza 5. I liked it gameplay wise. The story is decent but it f*cks up a lot, half of the things that happened didn't didn't make any sense and still don't. And why did Haruka, who started off as a smart mature character, have to name drop Kiryu's name and her relationship with him, and have to quit her career as an idol before it even took off after all the sacrifices everyone did for her?? That was so dumb. And my GOD did I hate playing as Haruka, not only did I dislike her character but I also had to suffer hearing that stupid annoying song, Konnan, over and over.

Not only this decision ruined her reputation but she almost got herself killed multiple times in the next game. Like she somehow just lost 300 or her 350 iq starting from this game. The good old Haruka we know is a master at avoiding dangers better than anyone else in Kamurocho despite she is only like 10 and then she escalated into this. Yeah I can take it like she inherited the tendency of self-sacrifice from Kiryu but she basically just made Kiryu’s own sacrifices meaningless. Kiryu and Haruka's story should've ended here. Sega really ruined Haruka in 6 imo. Honestly thought she deserved someone who had similar characteristics to Akiyama, Saejima, and Kiryu, characters the fanbase has come to love. Well each yakuza entry has poor character connections that seems to always get written in and off anyways due to poor writing and unplanned sequels besides milking and milking and milking of a series. Example being Tanimura's disappearance despite the importance of his character that was established in Y4. All because he was modeled after an actual celebrity, way to go sega. Shinada ends up a useless character and is just sorely out of place in the grand scheme of things and his combat style was shitty. As for me Y6 never happened😅
@LVL5esper

Yusei Fudo Yeah, i liked the comedic relationship between Takasugi and Shinada too. His involvement to the overall plot was just so pointless and it stuck out like a sore thumb. It makes much more sense to keep Tanimura over Akiyama in overall plot perspective imo. All Akiyama had going for him was his naturally written charisma which resulted in him as a fan favorite, me included. If only Mine survived in Y3, him meeting Akiyama would be an interesting scenario as 2 of the richest characters in the game. One being a Yakuza and the other a civilian operating a loan business on Tojo clan's turf. When I found out about Tanimura I was quite disappointed with why Sega chose to model him after some celebrity especially if they wanted to make a next installment after Y4. He might as well dont even exist anymore in the game's world. I haven't played Y0 and the remake Kiwami yet so at least those would be a fresh restart to Kiryu's story for me.

Yakuza 6 indeed should have gotten a different story. I would rather have a story about someone calling out Kiryu and hitting his friends one by one, not kill just hospitalized, and Haruka gets kidnapped. Kiryu starts doing some quests to get the kidnapper to release Haruka. In the end he gets deeper and into Hiroshima where he meets the Yakuza there. The kidnapper wants the secret in exchange for her life. And then it goes to the finale where Kiryu fights everyone cause if he don’t she dies. Then the kidnapper is revealed and Kiryu gives the secret. But before they leave, Haruka gets shot but Kiryu takes the bullet and fights to the last of his strength until the Dragon finally sleeps for eternity. That or have Majima as the villain and they both kill each other. Yakuza 6 discards every other character from its predecessors in favor of Yakuza from Hiroshima.
