This post was beyond helpful. For the past year I have been looking for more detailed experiences with regard to the audition process for Yale and Juilliard and this is definitely what I needed. Question: regarding the resume requirement for certain MFA programs, how important was the resume to the application process and do you think that played a part in your selection? Or was it strictly based on your performance? Thank you!

Thanks for the great question, Danielle! The short answer is: the quality of your performance in the audition is the most important factor to being accepted. I’ve often heard that MFA programs prefer applicants who’ve taken time between their undergraduate training and their application in order to gain real-world experience. I had worked for five years before deciding to audition. However, in my class alone, there were four students who had just graduated from BFA and BA programs. I think your resume is simply an indication of your background, your training, etc. The auditors are trying to get to know you. You don’t need impressive credits to be considered. I think the most important part of the puzzle is that YOU feel ready to be in a program such as Yale or Juilliard. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Anthony!! Thanks so much for this! I was marathoning your videos last week to get inspiration, and I wanted to thank you so much for providing such great resouces for everyone to utilize. Your video with Janet Fiki was also very helpful, because I also don't have a lot of experience with acting other than taking one studio class, and taking one of the acting Masterclasses. Do you and John both offer online coaching? I'm looking to go to Yale as well, and super appreciative of all of John's insights on the process. In the meantime, I'm working on reading plays, living life, and getting inspired by the day to day until the application process opens up again. Looking forward to working with you both!

Thank you for sharing this load of information! Where can someone search for and access monologues when they don't have student access? I am struggling to find playscripts, let alone their monologues, online. I'd rather not pay for an entire playscript, when I have yet to read the monologue and decide if it's what I want to perform.

i have an anxiety/waiting for results question for john. i thought my audition went really well. my auditor was tamilla woodard, and she seemed very responsive to me, moreso than i would have imagined and more than i usually experience in an audition setting. she had me do a third monologue and was laughing thru it and when i was done, even went out of her way to tell me it was "a delight." i walked out of there feeling like i had laid it all down and the positive feedback kinda blew my mind bc they always say they don't do that. then: no callbacks (only one person from my hour for second look). also there were apparently no end of morning callbacks that day...my question is: john, did you know or have you known anyone who didn't have callbacks day of but who nonetheless made it to final callback weekend or even were otherwise accepted to the school? i felt i put every part of myself into that room so if this is the end of the road i'm just like, ready to despair and assume i will never get into one of these schools lol. what's the word on the street about tamilla woodard? is she just absurdly, unnecessarily generous? or just, do you have any advice re: in the room feedback generally? i have no idea how to take it given i didn't anticipate it happpening at all.

o, also: idk if this is relevant but they were definitely running pretty late that day, which makes me wonder abt how they were prioritizing the rooms and callback situations

@@sorchamccarrey first of all, great job for doing your best. That is all you can control, so you should be satisfied with yourself that you put it all out there. Art is subjective, and it can feel frustrating to "nail" an audition and not get a callback. Welcome to acting! And don't despair because the opposite is true too - you might deliver a terrible audition and get the part! I know I have. So try to exercise some grace. This experience is part of your journey, and if you use it as fuel to keep getting better, there's no limit to how much you can improve. Your job is to prepare as best you can and share your work. From there, you've got to find ways to live with the results and improve as an artist. If you'd like to talk more about anything related to your drama school audition journey, email me or Anthony and we'll be happy to chat more. john@howtogetintodramaschool.com anthony@howtogetintodramaschool.com Reference this comment so we know who you are. Always check the school’s website for audition requirements. If something’s not clear, call the Admissions Office of the school. They are literally paid to give you accurate information regarding what’s required.

Here is something pulled directly from the Yale website for you! "An M.F.A. candidate's undergraduate degree can be in any subject. Moreover, an undergraduate degree is not a requirement for admission. Many prospective students audition for and are admitted to the program in the spring of their senior year of college, and others are admitted who have no undergraduate degree." So, no! You can have studied anything during your undergraduate career -- there is even an instance for those who don't have an undergraduate degree (A certificate as opposed to an M.F.A.). Hope this helps.

When did you guys feel you were ready to apply? Like how do you know how much experience is enough to apply?
@HowToGetIntoDramaSchool
2 жыл бұрын
Great question, Becksss! And the answer is different for every actor. I'll start by answering your first question: after I graduated from undergrad, I worked as an actor for about 5 years before applying to Yale. And that was the right amount of audition and acting experience for me. (I often joke that I probably wouldn't have gotten in had I auditioned right after undergrad!) But that isn't the case for everyone. Some of my classmates auditioned right after they finished their undergraduate degrees and were accepted. Ultimately, it depends on YOU--"When do YOU feel ready?" When you can walk into the audition CONFIDENTLY and share your artistry, That. Stands. Out.

Man, I’m just really lost, I’m not even from USA but I’m looking for a kinda of acting guidance, cause although I’ve been in some plays before I’d like to haver more experiencie and technical knowledge, but there’s a lot of bureaucracy and monologue stuff, that just makes me lose my mind. I’m currently going to the 11th grade, but with all this auditions stuff just throws me away from my dream, cause man, it’s really hard to find some good acting classes with not such high requirements. I don’t even know why I’m complaining about, I’m just totally lost and looking for some help
