I have one of Ray's audio tapes (in a 2000 Ford F250 that still has an audio tape player to go with the CD player!) that has made quite a few road trips a bunch shorter than they would have been. One thing you need to keep in mind when you're listening to a Ray Stevens song... that boy ain't right!! He's a really good piano player and just about the time he gets into a beautiful song and it's just coming out so pretty it takes a left turn into something funny that just destroys that beautiful mood. He can't get all the way through a song without doin' something strange before the end! 😂🤣

@@judithturner1593 Johnny Horton had a number one hit with The Battle of New Orleans in 1959. The original was written by Jimmie Driftwood and released in as a single in 1958. It had been released in 1957 on an album that was a collection of folksingers. The radio stations wouldn't play it because it had the words "hell" and "damn" in it! So both Ray Stevens' and Johnny Horton's versions were covers of Jimmie Driftwoods song. Ray also did his own follow-up version called "The New Battle of New Orleans" after hurricane Katrina.

He’s got so many others to check out like “The Streak”, “It’s Me Again Margaret”, “Santa Claus is Watching You”, “Sitting Up With The Dead”, “Surfin USSR” and he has a more serious one he wrote called “Everything is Beautiful”. Also Home Free just released a cover to this song about a week ago. Definitely worth checking out. BTW love your Def Leppard shirt. I need to find one for my daughter she’s a huge fan of them.

While driving from New Hampshire to Washington state I played comedy tapes for my children so they didn’t argue over rock or country music. Best decision I ever made. Ray Stevens was really popular on the late 60s and 70s. Thanks for the memories.

His comedy songs are outstanding, funny, corny! BUT he won a Grammy for best song of 1970 with "Everything Is Beautiful", a beautiful serious song about peace, love and understanding...it shows his singing, songwriting and piano skills! You'll need the version with the video, beautiful and will make you tear up. It was song of the year and more!

Wait a minute. 🤔 You guys are actually listening to a comedic song that I requested?! 😮 Woohoo! 👍🏽😁 My list, again.... "The Streak" - Ray Stevens "Rappin Rodney" - Rodney Dangerfield... you loved him in Caddyshack. Pat Benetar has a quick cameo appearance) "You Look Marvelous" - Billy Crystal (pay attention to the celebrity party guests) "Big Cockroach" - Kip Adotta "Wet Dream" - Kip Adotta (Don't be afraid of the name, the song isn't dirty at all.)

Ray Stevens is definitely in the funny collection. I grew up traveling with my parents and we even lived in Pascagoula, Mississippi for a short time. My mother took us to small country churches and this reminded me of a country church in Florida. I get a real laugh every time I hear this song.

My grandmother loved Ray Stevens and I remember watching his music videos (on VHS!) when I was a kid. Chiming in to lobby for "Everything is Beautiful" as a lovely song that you won't believe was written by the same person. Also, not seeing enough love in these comments for "Sittin' Up with the Dead", which for my money has some of the greatest comedic lines ever uttered.

You really have to appreciate how hard it is to write a song like this that will make people laugh and also enjoy the melody at the same time. Comedy is always hard to do

This is so much fun. Ray Stevens had two sides, the comic side and a more serious side. For what might be his most hilarious song, check out “The Streak”. For his more serious side, check out “Everything Is Beautiful” and “Misty”. I think you’ll enjoy them all. ❤

The streak came out when I was a kid. After taking a bath my brother would open the door stark naked singing the streak as loud as he could & my mom would be waiting for him to come out with a fly swatter chasing him screaming get your clothes on. I've never seen someone climb the stairs so fast. Thanks for reminding me of it. I had forgotten about it. Still smiling

Every time I hear this I think of my Dad, whom I lost in Aug of 2020. He absolutely loved Ray Stevens! Have to admit, I love him as well. ☺️Funny thing? I had a great aunt who lived in Pascagoula. 😂 You need to check out some of his others, like Hello, Margaret, Ahab the Arab, The Streak, and the Shriners Convention.👍❤️
