The loudness knob is not useless, it just works differently and doesn't perform the classic loudness function - and someone commenting on your AX-550 video explained how you're supposed to use it.

I must confess, this combination of speakers and amp sounds amazing! I wonder how it sounds with Magnat MSP 70.

Excellent Review, I have a Yamaha ax 550 which I have in storage but one of the channels keeps going out. I tried spraying it with contact cleaners but to no avail. So hoping I cannot solve the problem in the future.

saturnfirepaw I hav 2 marantz 2238b, on is mint and perfect working, the other i have for one year now. This afternoon i turned on the thing for the first time. All the bulbs where out and the right channel only worked on mono. First i thought it was a speaker relays problem. But it had a new speaker relays and I thought they had soldered the new speaker relays wrong. it was not the speaker relays. I cleaned all the switches and potentiometers and now both channels work perfect in stereo. also clean the switches, sometimes the problem is not in the potentiometers but in the dirty switches. the bulbs are also working now. so dont give up on the yamaha

vintage stereo Thanks a treat I thoroughly cleaned the input selector knob which was also crackly. It was a difficult job. My ax550 is working like a dream. Thanks a lot. I watched your video about this review and I remember you saying the yahama ax550 sounds tube like, I dont know if that is a good thing or bad thing. In my lounge I am using a Yamaha Cr 800, which you have also reviewed. I also have a Yamaha CR 820 and an Audiotronic LA5050. I also own 2 Yamaha AV Amplifiers: DSP A1 and DSP AX 757se.

I want to know more about what you said about that variable loudness of these yamahas is useless. They are using this in their latest models today.
@vintagestereo

I have only 1 yamaha left , the cr-820. I forgot what was the issue but i believe that when you turn on that variable loudness the volume also changed automatically, that's what i didn't like about that loudness.

@@vintagestereo , Yes, I have seen this it some videos on KZitem. Even at Loe´n Tell Channel shows how the frequency response change when turn the loudness control down and is really something strange because affects all the curve way down. Anyway, do you think this is a point to consider as a big disadvantage to avoid me to buy a vintage AX450 ??
@vintagestereo
3 жыл бұрын
It would not be a issue for me because I don't use loudness anymore. When I started this hobby and made my first video's I loved loudness but 2/3 years later I came to the understanding that loudness is not the most beautiful way to hear the music. Loudness will push the mids down.

I wouldn't say Yamaha natural sound is completely a hoax. I view it as Yamaha as a brand, generally has its own distinctive sound. As you go up in amplifier models to quality does get better as with anything else but Yamaha sounds distinctively different than a sansui or pioneer. They call it "natural sound" but I wouldn't say it is actually "natural." Yamaha as a brand generally has a really clear sound to it. And it is nice to have some variety in your collection.

M.v.g. Dielis

Playing some westlife. KZitem user vwestlife would be pleased :) I have a mid 90's JVC receiver I bought new and it is the same titanium color which I love. It is amazing how much variation in sound there is between amps and speaker combinations. I think it is more luck that you find that combination that works more than anything.

Don't you know any MP3 is compressed, it doesn't matter how high is its sampling frequency ? All harmonics that give audiophile contour to any music are simply "swallowed" by MP3 format. Use vinyil or a good CD player....

Nuno MPC i prefer radio, 256kb in my country. To be honest, i have a bunch of cd's but download all the numbers I like from my cd's from the net and spin those ones....Was even too lazy too compress them myself from the cd's. So I never listen to my cd's, only the ones I could not find on the net. Have too compres those ones to mp3 but still too lazy to to that job.

Carlos Mergulhão My speaker is a transmission line (T Line) speaker..the one has internal divisions made by wood that construct, internally, a tunnel to the sound waves...designed by myself the same way i have designed and built my own amplifiers....they sound alike your set up....alike your Magnat speaker together this Yamaha.

Carlos Mergulhão Building your own stuff is so fantastic. I just did my first soldering job with the bi-pin lamps, and today i resoldered a speaker relays because I thought it was soldered wrong. I don't know nothing about electric schematics. I wish I knew what you know. I am happy with the magnat speakers but there are better speakers. Transmission line speakers are often very good sounding, with nice bass.

Sterophonic "image", true timbre characteristics and frequency response are simply truely ignored on your tests, due to your positioning and MP3 use...it's a shame, because you seem a nice and interested person on hi-fi.

Nuno MPC I know what you mean, but doesn't sound a record always sound better as a flac? yes in my opinion. Why we don't spin records anymore and prefer flacs ore mp3's above records? why is the cd more popular than vinyl? I am not a audiophile....that say I always listen to the radio, in my country radio is 256kb...My point is to have the best sound from either source you have, doesn't matter if it is tuner ore mp3. To be honest I rarely spin records...to much work, but yes the sound is better, I just review turntables for my channel but hardly use them myself . Another reason is that I never had a records where all the songs where good. So when I put on a record I also have to listen the shity songs I don't want to hear and I am too lazy to walk to that turntable and skip the needle. On a good system I can really enjoy the sound of a tuner. Why should we ban tuner, because it is not flac quality? I have more fun in a good radio station than listen too my own music, just because it's not only music but also talking from good dj's an the surprise they give me with their choice of music.. I think everybody have it's own taste. Not everybody drink their coffee black. When I miss my music I put on my mp3's and the quality is enough to enjoy the music for me. To have the best sound from a turntable you can invest in a 2000 dollar cartridge and a turntable from 5000, ore even more....I am just surching for a balance between a good sound with a setup what I think it's worth to invest my money in. For me that means a pair from 400 euro speakers, a vintage receiver from maximum 600 euro. So 1000 euro total. And for 1000 euro you can find many combinations, some will sound bad , other good and some almost perfect. Almost is enough for me, like my mp3's ore tuner sound is also enough for me, I think for most people. If I had a setup from 20.000 euro ore more I would be crazy to buy it for just tuner sound.

Nuno MPC watch this video: kzitem.info/news/bejne/sYiduJlmsXdeeo4 I think it's a shame to spin these speakers with this amp because the amp is garbage. The speakers would sound even better with a better amp. But he, I never had that sound in my house because I never had those speakers....Yes, I had far better amps than the amp he have but never that sound. I am sure that even with 128kb mp3's his sound will be better as my flacs on my system! But would i invest 2000 euro in a set of these speakers? No...For speakers like this I would not invest more as 1000 euro, even if they sound better as 10.000 euro speakers now new in the shop. I am sure that his setup sounds better as a lot of setups out there from guys who have invest 10.000 euro ore more and use flacs only.The trick is to find the best sound for the smallest investment. His speakers do the job for him, only the speakers make the sound. Most of us are looking for a sound like this, some of you struggling with very expensive speaker cables, expensive amps and expensive speakers from the shop. An this guy just prove that all you need is a set of incredible ugly old but just perfect sounding speakers.
