Multitrack recording of the Yamaha CS-30 in Ableton Live. All sounds from CS-30 except drums (Korg SR-120 MiniPops, Boss DR-110 and LoopLoft). Analog sequencer used: Korg SQ1.
These early Yamaha synths are actually great for drum synthesis. I had a Yamaha CS-15 and spent a day generating percussive noises using audio-range LFO settings and the pitch envelopes. Wow. Those drum samples I still use, even though I had to sell the CS-15. I love the wetness of the filters for acid sounds too. The filters are SO underrated. They really have their own character.

You are absolutely right! The CS range has that wonderful creamy filter! Will do a video on the CS-15 some time

Genuinely lovely work! Funny thing is, I've had your SH-5 and SH-7 videos on my Berlin school playlist for months, but never looked close enough to realize they were from the same person. Now I have to check out all the rest as well... You clearly have a talent at making analogue gear demos into musical pieces that are fully and thoroughly enjoyable on their own right. Thank you for sharing your art!

As an ex-owner of a CS-30L I can honestly say that this is the best demo I have ever heard of this underrated synth. You have managed to pull sounds out of it that have surprised me. I would love to own one again but they’ve gotten too expensive for my wallet. If only someone would make a VST of it, but it’s the CS-80 that gets all the attention. Anyhow, you’ve earned yourself a sub. Keep up the good work.

Thank you very much Tom. The CS30 has a wicked interface. You need to spend some time programming cause it’s not that intuitive at first. But in the end it’s always rewarding. This synth surprises me as well every time I play it. Too bad you don’t have the CS30L anymore. Maybe a CS-15 would be an alternative: it’s much more intuitive, still has nice routing options, has the lovely multimode filter (x2) and is more affordable

This sounds as good as it looks and in my opinion this is one of the best looking synths ever made. Came close to buying one on a couple of occasions but in the end was always scared of by that signal path! I really do need to get a CS15 though. Superb demo by the way.

I have a CS-10. Wanted a CS-15 because I fell in love with the Yamaha filters. But there was a CS-30 for sale local for the price of a CS-15, with the manual etc ... Nice, but a bunch of patches on sheet would be cool. It's a bit overwhelming so I don't use It much, takes so much time making basic sounds. That original manual doesn't help in anyway. I thought modular would be scary, but I connected very fast with that. Very nice sounds!

great demo! I love my CS30, it’s my fav for bass, even more so than my Minimoog. The sine mixing feature opens up so many possibilities. And with its the dual patch architecture it really feels like two synths in one. I mean four ENVs, a sequencer, ring mod, how more complete could a monosynth get? Sadly the audio path is very unintuitive to understand. Even after years of fiddling with it, I still scratch my head quite often. But I get my reward when mixing CS with real instruments - it just fits itself into the mix so well. And I love playing that original keyboard - Yamaha did a very good job here, imho.

Hi Paul, thank you very much! Shure I put some time and thinking in it, but the thing is that once you start tweeking and playing the CS30, inspiration just comes automatically. It is a bit of a weird synth (unique in routing and signal path and so on), which leads to unusual, but surprisingly musical results.

I’ve owned a CS-80 for over 20 years and I’ve said to inquiring minds that the smaller CS series packs a punch just as well if not more gnarly sounding oscillators. Don’t know why but it’s evident. You only need to invest a grand or two and not tens of thousands. JBReal.

Brilliant !! dude you´re a genius. Stay focused on the CS30 and you get amazing results . The modulated filter progrock solo towards the end is magnificent and showcases the quality of the filters - and of the composer/performes of course. Does the SQ1 track the oscillators in tune ? I tryed the Hz/V CV out of the Squarp Pyramid to track the CS30L with varying offsets bot nope, it doesn´t.
