I now use a Korg Kronos and Arturia's DX7 V plugin, which both load DX7 sysex banks, but I used various incarnations of the DX7 for 30+ years: DX7 Mk 1, TX7, DX7S & TX802. I even programmed my own sounds on it and it was a fantastic sonic complement to my other synths. It's a synth that may sound dry, cold and sterile when you first play it but, once you hear it in your mix, complete with effects and EQ, it is simply stunning. I still use DX7 sound in most of my work.

Thank you very much Milan! Everything is true what they say about the DX7: it ushered in the digital age, put an end to analog synthesis (at least for quite some time), it was terrible to program and yet it is so much more. It's inspiring and sounds so damn good in the mix.

this is awesome. the DX7 is one of my all time favorites. I've always been a big fan of the mysterious ambient pad type sounds I could get out of it, but I never knew it could do such meaty drum sounds! Well done.

I heard it once said "If you hear a shit synth sound on an 80s record.. it's a DX7". I don't know whether that's an insult or a testament to just how beloved it was.
@rimela
11 ай бұрын
I assume that also has to do with usage of the same factory sounds over and over again. Fortunately there are a lot of 80s (and later) records on which the potential of the DX can be heard, without being recognized.

Great! Would you like to share more about the way you process the tracks in Ableton? Do you record all the sounds as audio, and then the whole processing (dynamic, EQ, FX etc.) on the recorded tracks? And the MIDI programming you do also in Ableton?
@rimela
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Sure, here some details: Yes, I record the output of the synth directly into Ableton and do processing afterwords. That is: compression, EQ, delays, reverb per channel (just using the Ableton standard FX, no plugins). I usually record audio straight away and use MIDI for parts that need to be really tight (so I can adjust notes or use quantization). Usually (with analog synths) I tweak sounds, record and arrange on the fly, but with the DX7 that didn’t work for me. I spent several evenings (nights) programming sounds and once I had like 50 sounds or so I started recording and arranging. Having basic structures of songs I added extra layers here and the (extra bass, pads). With the DX you can add lots of layers without the mix sounding overcrowded. In the mixing stage I remove the low end of basically all tracks except kick and/or bass. Then some panning and getting the volumes right. On the master channel I use a (multiband) compression, some EQ and limiter. So I mix and master in one go, being able to tweak individual tracks if they don’t sound good in the (master)mix.

I've just purchases your DX7 patches. What number patch is thst at 0:33 ? I cant seem to find it.
@rimela
5 ай бұрын
Thank you for your support! The patch is MONOLEAD 1 which is located at patch number 30 in the first bank. On the original DX7 the Function Controls are not saved in a patch. To get the exact lead sound set the following parameters: FUNCTION 2: MONO FUNCTION 5: FINGERED PORTA FUNCTION 6: GLISSANDO=ON FUNCTION 7: PORTA TIME=18 FUNCTION 17: WHEEL RANGE=52 FUNCTION 20: WHEEL EG B.=ON FUNCTION 29: AFTER RANGE=25 FUNCTION 30: AFTER PITCH=ON Now the lead sound becomes very expressive: play with the Modulation Wheel to get a filter sweep like effect, add vibrato with aftertouch.

Sounds so good! Do you have an extension card on it like e! or Supermax?
@rimela
Жыл бұрын
I have the DX7 JME SPX V1.6 expansion, which gives the DX7 4 banks of patches and all function parameters are stored within a patch. Soundwise it gives the opportunity to layer a sound and detune the 2nd layer, giving up half the polyphony. I used this layer option on a few sounds in the demo. You could do this also by recording a part twice while detuning the DX on the second recording. The DX7 mkII has the layering option as standard.
