Few things so I don't have to repeat myself in the comments; 1. It does not lock out, it would fall over like a normal bike so no this is not a trike. 2. It turns and leans like a normal bike, the front forks are independent to each other. 3.You can filter, it just depends on the size of the road. The width of the bike is no wider than a bike with panniers. 4.It's incredibly agile while riding it doesnt feel heavy and you can flick it through fast corners really easily. 5. Yes, it's not for everyone. 6. No, you can't drive it on a car license. 7. If you rode one you would understand what the point in having two front wheels were, I felt more confident riding this than mine in the twisties. 8. No people did not ask Yamaha to make this just like people didn't ask Honda to make a bike that rides its self, they are testing the water and showing their capabilitys. 9. You CANNOT compare this to a car, it is a solo motorcycle. Hope that helps 😊.

...it's a pity it doesn't 'lock out' because a chap I know lost his leg in a bike smash last year, and he's hoping to get back into biking. I suggested a twist and go Vespa 300 ...but he wants a 'proper bike' again , as he used to have a Yamaha FJR1300. You can have an air shifter fitted to cope with gear changes as it was his his left leg....

Gotta give it to Yamaha to have the stones to even make this bike. Would make a lot more sense though if they made it into a full tourer. They should add: Auto balancing/locking at a stop, a up & down quick shiftier (or the MV rekluse system) and a bigger wind screen.
@SteveInskip
5 жыл бұрын
MrMetalFinn Quite right! This is a concept that Yamaha have had the balls to produce and it’s obviously a stepping stone to something. Can’t understand the negative ‘Luddite’ comments. Yamaha don’t only make motorbikes remember and if you added auto-lock it would attract ‘nervous’ car drivers. Tyre wear.....the side loading should be shared so the front tyres should last longer and you wouldn’t need to replace them as a ‘set’. And no one is going to trade their Panigale for this so no point in comparing it to a sports bike.
@KevinRodgersGB

TBH the Piaggio version has just that. Makes sense if you're someone with a disability that would stop you riding because you can't manage the standing weight of a bike... or a short arse like me. Full tourer makes sense.

I think the Niken is cool but wonder how much of its improved stability is from the extra wheel and how much is from the extra weight? The Niken is 70kg heavier than an MT-09. If you put a 70kg weight over the front tire of an MT-09 and the springs to handle it, I bet it would feel planted too.

Thanks for the vid on that Chaz. I was sceptical about it on release, but after that I'm intrigued. My main worry, as I'd use it as a commuter, is running costs. I currently work for Avon tyres (possibly not much longer, they're making a lot of us redundant and possibly abandoning car tyre production in the UK) and I don't think we make sports/touring tyres in those sizes, so availability and cost would worry me, added to having an extra tyre to wear down. I'm riding a tracer, so the extra width doesn't worry me so much, but you're obviously much more confident in filtering on your mt09.

Great Review Chaz this is the first time I have seen a review of the Niken and any of your work. Good mix of road types and very interesting to hear your comments on how the bike handles potholes. Am considering swapping my Triumph Explorer for an MT-09 Tracer GT but seriously want to try this bike as I cover over 15,000 miles a year riding on all sorts of crappy UK roads in all conditions, Having 2 wheels to cope with a greasy diesel covered roundabout on a cold November morning would be very useful!! Am a bit of a demon filter expert myself and looking at the bike reckon you could force it through most of the gaps I get my Explorer with panniers on through anyday!!

If you manage it on your bike you'll probably be fine! It's definitely worth trying, the rubbish road conditions is where the Niken shines. On the demo weekends the routes they chose were all routes with dodgy road surfaces to show how much better it handles it all.

Seems complicated with linkage that ties to the handlebars and permits setting the bike up for a curve. I should think that gyroscopic precession (countersteer) would be somewhat different with two wheels. More stable? When I started riding bikes were fairly simple with carbs, points and were aircooled. Even tuning a 4 cylinder Honda back in K0 times was pretty straight forward with feeler guages, a timing light and dwell meter and a vacuum guage to line up the 4 carbs. Someone will buy it just to be different I suppose -- or maybe this the sign of the future. Got to be expensive too.

Theoretically you said you traveled "down" to Scotland, but actually since you were traveling north you traveled "up" to Scotland. It can lean up to 45 degrees. Most riders will never hit that haha.

It's good to see a comparison between the Niken and a normal MT-09. Sick to death of people saying 'it's not a bike' or 'it's ugly' The only thing that matters is, is it fun?

Does this have a centre stand,ur comment at the start was hilarious without meaning it to be,something all the boys want to hear,but ur honestly is quite refreshing when u review.I cant decide if I like it or dont,like you I'd be scarred initially as it looks like a tank from the front,but youre selling it quite well.

It doesn't have a centre stand.. I didn't notice one anyway ha! I know it's not for everyone and of course I was sceptical myself but you know it's good to try things for yourself and I'm always intrigued to ride different bikes so I really wanted to try this. I couldn't believe how much I built it up in my mind before riding it haha I really thought it would be so different but it's not it's just better if that makes sense.

I thought I heard other reviewers saying that you could filter/lane split with it.

I think this bike is great for people with disabilities as well, maybe its easier to ride if you have a prosthetic limb or balancing problems. Or if someone are scared of two wheels but want to feel the freedom of riding, this might be a good solution.

And in Europe you don´t need a licence to drive it, only normal car licence,

Would be if it could self right itself when at a stop, it would have been an amazing proposition for disabled people if it did that

With dual wheels on the front it should have excellent balance on the front. I would never ride if I have any fear of the bike.

The brakes must be insane.. I wonder how this bike would behave on a gravel road?!

Great concept and even better when they marry this with electric drive technology as a commuter bike. The target market is car drivers looking for safe and stable commuting options without needing to acquire all the riding skills of a traditional bike. Also commercial applications like deliveries and I can even see these for emergency services applications. It needs further development but there's an untapped market for this concept.

Gene Clarke it’s the same as riding a bike skill wise and if anything harder to grasp plus it weighs more

I respectfully disagree on your statement concerning the Niken's target. Although it being more stable, this does require the skills of a traditional bike. This specific machine is aimed towards motorcyclists seeking for a extra level of thrills. This specific machine is not designed to be sold in large numbers, the fact that Yamaha only sells and builds these on order proves that. For example, Piaggio put in the extra effort on their MP3's and altered those for European car drivers being able to legally ride the MP3 with a car license. Those are aimed at the target market that you are talking about. Compare a MP3 to a Niken and you will quickly find that the only similarity they have is having 3 wheels.

One Studios: You are correct on the skill level. In the States this would require a motorcycle license and all the training / testing that goes with it. I was looking at this as a workhorse bike for commuting and commercial applications where the resulting increase in traction on the front end of +80% could replace a vehicle in most weather conditions. The increase in traction would be somewhere between great and life saving especially for emergency services use, I don't see this as a replacement for traditional motorcycle applications except perhaps older riders looking for more stability than a two wheel machine offers. Yamaha is certainly testing the waters with this concept and it maybe several years before it finds its home. I give Yamaha credit for thinking out f the box and I understand Honda is not far behind.

Oh yeah. Let me be clear, I don't think your view on this is entirely wrong, I actually think Yamaha is working towards that target market. Just not with this specific model. The patents for a 300cc Niken actually already exists. I think putting this Niken out for a small group to buy it(lets be realistic here, it's a very expensive toy and not much more for the customer), puts Yamaha in the position to analyse the customer experience in using this machinery, same as the dealer experience with working with this machinery. So without impacting their brand too much, they can tweak and optimise the mechanics and such working towards a Niken with for example, a 323cc displacement as to be found in the R3 and MT-03's. For Urban commuting work. Or the 689cc's to be found in the MT-07's and such. For more all-round work. Using those platforms they could obviously bring the costs down by a large portion, putting out a machine that people actually can afford (at least in large numbers) and then you would suddenly have a change changer. The patents for a 300cc Niken actually already exists.

Yamaha tried a different front end system way back with the GTR1000 hub centre steering, it never caught on, not enough advantages over a conventional front end, I think this will be the same. The BMW telelever front end has the same planted feeling especially on the older heavier oilhead bikes.
