Watch as we do a lower unit rebuild on a Yamaha F225 outboard motor. This is a complex process, and in reality it would make little sense to undertake this entire job from a financial standpoint. A unit with this much damage? It would be much easier to replace the whole unit.
However, we want you to see each part of this process in case you need to perform repairs on your outboard. In the video, John will start with an essential step: understanding the deviation from zero in the lower unit. This will allow you to fine-tune the position of the forward, reverse, and pinion gears so that they interact correctly using a range of shims. John will show you how to shim the lower unit to get the gears to the right place.
Then, we’ll install the forward and reverse gears and get the prop shaft housing ready for installation. Next, we’ll work on the input shaft and shift assembly. We’ll turn our attention to the output shaft and then get the prop shaft housing installed.
After we get the shift shaft built up and installed, the process turns back to the math. John will explain how you need to figure out the forward and reverse gear backlash and get the right shims for the pinion gear to position it correctly. This will involve a little work, since we’ll have to disassemble, reassemble, and then check components, but this is the best way to ensure the lower unit works properly.
