There's a fella in my neighbourhood with one. He's got a full system on it. It is, without question, the LOUDEST bike I've ever heard. He passed me on the highway, and got a half mile ahead quick. I could still hear him like he was right in front of me. It really sounds like a GP bike.

+BaronVonGrumble I believe it was an option for the data logger also clutchless upshifts is an option in the US. The US r1m out of the dealership is slower then the EU version but the one I rode had an exhaust and flashed ecu so it was up to speed That being said I ride a s1k everyday and am very used to its straight line raw power that feels stronger, I still think the r1m is the best looking bike out there and defiantly best around a track, but I couldnt give up the bmw luxuries

Great review. I felt much the same way with the much more primitive but still beasty RD250 I had back in the day. It seemed (and was for the time) insane to ride it on public roads. The power and speed was stunning, at that time. Yet, I eventually used it as my work bike for a year when I was a courier in the City of London. In time, a man can get used to anything. Good to see another video from you mate and thanks again for a good review.

Owning a standard one I mostly agree with your opinions on them. Although mine isn't standard I took it to Snetterton and thought I was taking it easy on track braking early... I beat my best time on my Fireblade by over 5 secs without really trying! I ride with the anti lift off to keep me from going too fast or it's ridiculous! Considering visiting the ring and a tour of Spain next summer but as you say it may be less comfy than other bikes but I love it nonetheless :)

Alright Chap, The lights are really very good at night. I've got a standard R1 (yeah poor me LOL) and commute 36 miles each way to work. Shifts dictate that I have to use the bike at night and the lights are epic actually. I have had to lower the beam slightly as I was blinding oncoming traffic but considering the tiny little lens I was genuinely surprised at how good it was. Great review.

So Yamaha looked at Ducati and went "hey that's a good idea!" just years later? What I mean about that is Ducati has had the reputation of being the company that their street bikes were the closest to their race bikes.. That they were basically slightly detuned race bikes made street legal whereas all other sport bikes were street bikes built for the street that were comfortable for the street but if you wanted to you could take them to the track. The Ducatis kept the jerky throttle, hard starting, chattery clutch and all that of the race bike making it a VERY visceral experience but just put a slightly cheaper suspension and brakes on it, a cat system and detuned the power a tad, where all the other sport bikes were race bikes only in looks. The other companies had plush suspension, really smooth clutches and throttles, not THAT much power (the older R1 only pumped out about 140bhp while the Panigale was putting out 195) and generally were just playing the part of a race like bike until you modified them.

well ducati is like the ferrari of bikes i have big respect in ducati still though dont forget that japanese bikes always were into engine reliability and less hp for more mass market therefore cheaper materials and cheaper bikes but cheaper modifications and so many upgrades also. After 2010 most of the japanese companies upgraded their bikes to a more racing attidude without losing their daily riden character.r1-m and h2r are for more selective individuals. like ducati pgale editions. Most ducatis before 2004 were crap you were buying only the name. japan was ruling the motorbike world and in my opinion even if it got left behind in some upgrade details motogp proves it still is.

I agree with your comments after riding the standard bike last weekend.the 1 I rode had been re mapped which apparently had smoothed out the on off throttle at low speeds buts as still very apparent. After jumping off my beemer on to this I also found the brakes to be very average and the seat height also made the bike intimidating for the first half an hour. All this said I am still considering buying 1

I've got a R1M and I've been very surprised about many tests made on several different R1 models concerning the real power delivered. The "weakiest" engine was giving 174 ps and the "strongest" 198. Tests were made the same days on same bench. What really annoyed me was that the M models were always on the "weak" sides. I'm not really sure my skills can allow me to feel the difference but when you pay a certain amount to have the best-of a model, it sucks a little.

I think having your weight against the tank is preferable, so that it's easier to have less weight on your hands, especially under breaking. I also prefer to be 'in' the bike, but my RSV4 has the same kind of tall feeling. It's the seat height. But, having your weight slightly higher is supposed to be better for agility in corners because it puts more weight at the top of the 'lever'.

Why would you buy it as a track only bike though? you'd need to be an expert track day rider already - lest other track day guys with their secondhand track setup 675s and project 2011 R1s would think "nob". It's exquisite, no doubt, but a sane bike for amateur track days is not a new R1M. Wasted at legal speeds. And difficult to justify as a trackday only bike as well ? was it really made just to homologate. The R1S starts to make more sense now.

quickshifter up i totally get for a sport bike, really on any bike for the convenience and smoothness, but auto blips on cars and bikes going down through the box is just lazy and takes away from the experience. Excellent review. .. In a way I could feel the moments of possible terror that would be assumed by most riding this machine in its present guise. An app to send data set up details is bloody entertaining to say the least... Agreed on the styling with this particular model over the more standard issue ut all models very similar from what I've seen ....most will be only worth their salt on a proper track as can't see it being any more than a the scariest novel way of doing a local commute to the local food hole. .. Gotta take a look at one just for the hell of it ... Rsm
