I used to love RD 80LC - 80ccm on light weight wheels. It had 9HP and could slap 100km/h+ on the black.

Nice! The ones in South Africa had farings and a lower scoop. There was always rivalry between the RZ and MBX’s😂 I couldn’t compete on my MT5 - but I loved her all the same. My ticket to freedom…. The “ace “ rider at school took his RZ to the local kart track and went up against the 125’s - gave them a bloody nose in the twisty bits and lost on the straights. It was the most exciting local race that I ever saw. Similar to your Aussie V8 vs Mini 😀

South Africa had and still has a great 2 stroke scene. It's nice to see them still being taken care of somewhere. Small bikes are best when ridden at the limit! Cheers for watching.

The engine on this bike is kinda crazy cause it’s not the old 17w engine that was on previous liquid cooled 50cc Yamahas and it’s not the European am6 engine either of the newer 50cc Yamahas. Especially with the electric start only and the and the way the the cylinder mounts to the engine. This is some oddball design I wish they kept 🥲

This bike is totally pack a lot of fun. I wonder if you do some porting to the block and make a thinner head, remove the air filter, retune the pj and mj of the carb would make it faster hahaha

Wow, it runs so clean through the whole register even if the power is in the higher rpm´s. I guess it can take some more gear for more top speed if you wanted! Do you use km/h in Nz? I didnt know!

6 gears is excessive for the amount of speed it has to offer lol, almost cruel and unusual punishment for you and your neighbours did it even need disk brakes? sure they could have saved quite a bit by using BMX type braking lol

Probably doesn’t neeeeeeed disc brakes but it makes it more snappy and fun.

I wish Yamaha had imported these into the states. I loved the small two stroke street bikes. I would like to try the coast to coast record. Honda MB 5 has it currently. It would be a 3000 mile run.
@SmallBikeStuff

That would be awesome! I'd love to do the length of NZ too. It's worth having a look for importers in the USA as a lot of these bikes now meet requirements to be legal in the USA.

I don't know if I would volunteer my little 2 stroker for a test ride without first replacing the tachometer with one having a "red line" several thousand lower than the original ! I liked, "seemed like it wanted to go there !" OMG !!! Poor little YAMMIE !!!!! LMAO ! J/K

Haha I completely understand. It was only the first run I wasn’t really looking down due to the rain and watching for other vehicles, but after a quick peak down I got a shock. Managed to mostly keep it away from there after that pull. Amazing fun to ride, not the first time I’ve ridden these RZ50’s. All the power being above 8-9k makes for interesting times.

@@SmallBikeStuff Size must be relevant as I once owned Yamaha RD200's, an RD250, & RD350, and they left many Honda 750's back at the stop lights very frustrated and red faced. The little RD200's were particularly quick out of the hole, and most power on those 2 strokes was obtained at the end of the rev range ! Had to stay on the "pipe" as we used to say to keep em flying ! And fly they did ! They sounded like thousands of angry hornets !!! Not unlike the RZ50, lol !!!
@EllaBananas

Its a 2 stroke, so the amount of damage that can be caused by overrev is fairly limited. No valves to float. Eventually ofc the rod will let go, but the engine should hit an airflow limit before that happens.
